Accepting credit cards, warehouses, and shipping and fulfilling orders
I have read a few discussions on here about using AED currency with PayPal in the UAE but it isn’t completely clear that there is a solution.
We are a general trading company in Dubai and want an online store to distribute to the local market. Shopify allows AED as the default site currency but PayPal doesn’t, although from reading this forum there seems to be a way to keep AED as the currency at payout even with PayPal processing.
We don’t mind if PayPal convert the AED payments into USD in our Paypal account, however what we want to avoid is the customers seeing USD at checkout - we want them to see prices in AED and pay in AED.
If anyone knows definitively that we can integrate PayPal in a Shopify site and for AED to be default and payment currency then I will be eternally grateful for you help.
PS: we understand that PayPal is not a perfect solution but from our research it is the best out of all the payment gateways that are available to us (PayTabs, 2Checkout, Pay Fort).
Hi Sean,
Guru Micah here!
I definitely get wanting to charge AED on your site and have all your prices show AED for your customers shopping. As you know, you are completely correct with setting your Shopify stores default currency to be AED will solve all of this as you said, but as per the payment gateways this is a little bit trickier. Now for the Payment Processors available in Dubai your best bet would be to contact each one of them to see what features they allow along with their Transaction fees and if they allow AED to be the default currency. That way you will be able to see what features/processor works best for you and your business.
Another route to take a look into would be Manual Payment Methods. This will allow you to accept common types of manual payments like cash on delivery (COD), money orders, and bank transfers. The best part is you don’t get charged transaction fees for using Manual Payment Methods.
Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions Sean!

Hi,
We run a UAE ecommerce selling to local market. We recently move to shopify. I would like the website currency to be AED as I am selling in the UAE and have a lot of COD orders. But it seems that PayPal requires the currency to be USD. I don't mind if PayPal charges in USD but I would like the check-out currency to be AED. Is there a way round this issue like having PayPal Business to convert the AED into USD?
Many thanks
could u provide me with the solution if u reach a propper one?
