Accepting credit cards, warehouses, and shipping and fulfilling orders
I'm thinking of switching to Shopify Payments. However being based in the UK we've had a few problems with using some non UK Companies where they assume we operate the same as US/CAN. Mainly on details like Company Registration or Company ID#s, the hours I've spent trying to explain we just don't have anything like that in the UK, only for an email to follow asking to upload my Company ID#.
Any other UK sellers using or tried using Shopify Payments.
Thanks, Paul

Nice smooth & easy, unlike some of the other merchants we've come across, Shopify Payments understand what we do and don't have in the UK.
Hey, @Paul_Nash1!
I understand why you would be concerned about using Shopify Payments. Not all foreign companies are set up properly to cater to international clients and this can cause unnecessary issues. While I can reassure you that's not the case with our payment gateway, I appreciate the value and impact of getting confirmation from fellow merchants so it's a good idea that you've come here and asked for some insight.
As you wait for responses, I thought I'd share what we require from our merchants in the UK when they wish to use Shopify Payments to hopefully add to the clarification that fellow UK merchants can provide.
This is what we state in our Shopify Payments for the United Kingdom doc from the Shopify Help Center:
Requirements for Shopify Payments
To use Shopify Payments, ensure that you can meet the following requirements.
Prohibited businesses
Some types of businesses and services are not permitted to use Shopify Payments. To see whether you can use Shopify Payments, check the list of prohibited business types for the United Kingdom.
More details can be found in the Shopify Payments Terms of Service (TOS).
Bank account requirements for Shopify Payments
Make sure that your bank account meets the following requirements before you connect it to Shopify Payments:
- The bank account is a full checking account (current account) with a bank in the United Kingdom in GBP currency.
- The bank account is eligible for FPS transfers.
Checking accounts that are set up to accept only wire transfers don't work with Shopify Payments. Savings accounts, flex-currency accounts, virtual accounts, and money-transferring services that mimic bank accounts aren't supported by Shopify Payments.
To confirm that your account can accept the transfer type listed for your region, contact your bank.
Personal information requirements for Shopify Payments
In response to regulations in different countries, you're required to provide information about you and your business. The information is collected to help identify merchants using Shopify Payments, including the beneficial owners of a particular corporate entity. The purpose of collecting this information is to comply with regulatory requirements designed to prevent money laundering, terrorist financing, and other financial crimes.
As local rules and regulations evolve, Shopify and its partners might reach out to collect additional information about you and your business. These standard reviews can occur at anytime during the lifespan of your Shopify account.
The information that Shopify is required to collect differs from country to country, but typically includes documentation about the following:
- the individual creating the Shopify Payments account
- the business associated with the Shopify Payments account.
- the individuals who ultimately own or control the business, which includes the business owner or a senior executive with legal signing authority for the business
Acceptable document types for individuals and businesses in the United Kingdom include the following.
Identity documents:
- Passport
- Driver license
- Resident permit
- Citizen card
- Electoral ID
- Validate UK
Address documents:
- Driver license
- Utility bill
- Statement from a financial institution
- Government-issued letter
- Solicitors letter
- Council or housing association documentation
- Benefits Agency documentation
- Electoral Register entry
- NHS Medical card
- GP letter of registration with the surgery
Company/entity documents:
- VAT registration
- Certificate of Incorporation
- Companies House Document
- HM Revenue and Customs: VAT certificate
- HM Revenue and Customs: account statement
- Charity Commission Document
- OSCR Scottish Charity Regulator

I'll also leave a link to our doc on setting up Shopify Payments should you decide to do this. Once you're ready to use our payment gateway, you can refer to this guide for assistance with setting it up.
