Automatically change restocked item to used

We have a store that sells hardware. We offer new hardware, but for some products, we also have cheaper, used variants. If a customer buys our hardware, it's usually a new product. If they rent it, we ship used hardware. In some cases, when a customer wants to try our hardware before buying it, we send new hardware. If they choose not to go with our hardware, they return it. However, if I create a return for their order, the product is still categorized as new. I then need to go into the inventory and adjust the quantities of new and used variants. I want to automate this process but don't know how. Does somebody have a solution for this?

What would you want automated, exactly?

For example, if product has tag X, then change something on the product? Or add / subtract inventory at a certain location for that product, and add / subtract inventory of another product, at some location, that has a different tag?

If you outline exactly what you'd like automated (step by step instructions and data points), you'll have a good chance at finding a solution.

I will try to explain again:

Example:

We have a EPOS system, which runs on iPad. Our store sells iPads to custmers so they can use our EPOS. The iPads are avaiable in two conditions (variants), New and Used. Customer buys iPad but doesnt like our system, therefor wants to return the iPad. I create a return on the order that initially was a New iPad. The iPad arrives to our warehouse, so i restock it, but it is restocked as New. I want it to be restocked as the Used variant.

Hello,

Supercycle might be able to help with this. We introduce the concept of 'Serials', i.e tracking items at an individual item level.

You would use Shopify to manage your 'new' inventory, and Supercycle to manage your 'circular' inventory, essentially anything for resale or rental (or just NOT new).

We can actually also manage that rental (or try before you buy) functionality and availability etc for you.

Let me know if you'd like a demo.
