I am working on 2 Shopify stores where on one store USPS calculating shipping works properly but on the other store, it does not work.
The issue is that it will calculate shipping accurately for 1 product in the cart but not for any more, eg. shipping for 10 products costs the same as 1 product.
The difference between the stores is the plan; The working shipping store is on Shopify Basic Monthly the broken shipping in on Shopify Monthly.
That leads me to belief the more expensive plan, Shopify Monthly, does not calculate shipping?

It sounds like your products may not have weights entered. Live shipping relates relies on the total weight of the order to be able to calculate the correct shipping cost. Your plan won't have an impact on shipping rates at all.
To add in weights to your product, I'd recommend using our bulk editor. Simply go to Products > All Products, and select all your products. Click "Edit products", and then you'll be able to edit your product weights.
If you do have weights connected to your products already, then we might need to look at your shipping settings. If you can send through a screenshot of the issue with shipping calculations, that will give me a better indication of what might be happening.
Hi Miles, thanks a lot for the response.
The weights are properly setup for our products, I made sure of it. Heres various screenshots of weights, checkouts and shipping settings:
I then go to order 1 hoodie from NY to Seattle, using USPS Priority Mail and the shipping cost is $8.42:
But also shipping 10 of the same hoodie also costs $8.42:
This does not happen on another store work for which is on the Basic Plan so the only thing I can assume is that its the plan.
I hope these screenshots will help but if not, please let me know what I can do for you to get this looked at as its important part of our store.
Thanks a lot.
Apologies for the delay with this response. Thanks for the screenshots, they were super helpful.
I'm going to need to take a deeper look into this for you as I cannot work out why this would be happening. So I've sent you an email to the email registered on your profile. Could you please respond there with the answers to the questions I've asked there? Once I've got that, I'll be able to access the store and see what we can work out.
Did anything ever come of this? We are experiencing similar issues, and it's costing us several thousand dollars a week.
So Far Shopify Support hasn't been able to identify the problem, nor do they really understand the issue.
I'm Miles from the Social Care team at Shopify. Thanks for reaching out.
I'd love to help you sort out this issue. Would you be able to respond to this post with some more information about what's happening on your store? Screenshots and ticket numbers from previous support interactions will be super helpful to help me work out what might be going on.
In the interim, please check out some of our resources on setting up your shipping - specifically when using weight based rates or live shipping rates. I'd recommend checking out how to set up your live shipping rates as well as our overview on shipping rates.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Thanks for getting back to me. I think you've forgotten to attach the screenshot, but what you've written has made sense.
To help you out, I'm going to send you an email to the email address listed under your profile in our Community Forums. I'll need to do a quick authentication with you and I'll have some follow up questions. If you could reply to that email when you get a chance, I'll be happy to work out what's happening.
I am having similar issues here. The postage price will update after item 2, but won't adjust after that when items are added to the cart. Weights have been added and everything is under the same postage profile. Any help would be appreciated.
Has there been a fix for this yet? I am having a similar issue and and loosing money on shipping because Shopify isn’t calculating it correctly.
@shopryleeroo We were having the same issue and here's the answer from Shopify Support:
This is expected behaviour for USPS. The product on your screenshot, XYZ is 0.62lb and the default package for shipping is almost 0.7lbs which would bring the package weight to 1.32lbs. for 10 products, the total weight would be 6.9lbs.
USPS has the same rates for products between 1.1 lb - 20 lb. Rate increases above 20lb. I went ahead and added a few products onto the cart that would bring the weight above that and the rates do change.
So, try above 20lb and see if the rates still don't change
We are getting the same issue. We added 20+lbs as weight total for 10 pieces of our products (2lbs/piece), still the shipping fee is the same. Also, how to get the non-discounted rate?
Has anyone come up with a solution for this? It's ridiculous that any of us should be going through this and support has not been able to fix it.
As mentioned by @Miles have you checked the weight of your products? Are they configured under the Product section? If yes then kindly check your shipping setup. Then also if the problem persists kindly contact Shopify live chat support: https://help.shopify.com/en/questions#/contact/chat
Yes, all weights are correct. And yes, I have worked with Shopify support and No, they don't know why this is happening. A google search brought me here and apparently this is a problem that has been going on for years. This is costing money and it's frustrating that no one can fix it. Shopify has come up with all kinds of excuses and even has tried to teach me about shipping.....problem is, I've been shipping for years and this shouldn't be happening. Problem is that support has most likely never shipped at all and they are the ones that have no clue.
I am having the same issue. Weights are entered. Had a customer buy multiple products. Shopify charged 12.00 the n I click to get a lable and shipping was 32.00. So it's calculating when I get the label but shopify is not combining items when the buyer's shipping is calculated. How does this get resolved?
I figured I would update anyone that comes on here looking for an answer. Shopify does not have one other than they suggest to use a third party app, because they don't have a clue how to fix. They offered a few suggestions and the funny thing is that we are using the real time postage as an add-on for an addition $20/month. The apps they suggested are cheaper and can do what shopify can't.
I hope this message finds you well and you're new year is off to a great start! I was looking through community posts trying to find some information on the shipping calculator problem I'm having while setting up this aspect of our shopping cart. I'm having the exact same issue that @Dunne-08 was having when he started the trail on this topic. I've selected USPS through Shopify as a shipping method, using the Priority Mail as an option, but the rate doesn't change when I ad multiples of our product and stays at $10.43 whether I have quantity of 1 or 10 of the item. It stays the same unless I jump the quantity up to 20 and then the Priority Mail cost jumps up to $60.31
I have the item weight as 1 lb on the item and have selected padded envelope, not flat rate USPS packaging, so all item / packaging data has been properly entered. How can I get this looked at or corrected? I appreciate any help on this and look forward to your reply.
Hi Miles. We are also facing similar issues while calculating the shipping rates. Shopify doesn't seem to calculate the shipping cost based on the total number of packages required for shipping all the products ordered. For example, regardless of the number of products added, the shipping costs seem to be calculated just based on the total weight of the products. Also the dimensions doesn't seem to be taken into account. I would expect that the total shipping cost is calculated based on the number of items that the default package can accommodate. For example, a 6x6x6 inches box cannot practically accommodate more than one item which is 5x5x5 in dimensions right ? Please advise if I am missing something from my end?
I can completely understand your concern but unfortunately within Shopify, you can only fetch shipping rates based on product weight. However, there are workarounds like Multi Carrier Shipping Label App that allows you to set dimensions of your products along with weights to get accurate shipping rates. The app comes with a 14 day free trial so you can check out if this app works for you or not!
