Accepting credit cards, warehouses, and shipping and fulfilling orders
We will soon set up a new digital product on our Shopify store that customers can purchase and download either for free, or they can make a donation. Is there an app or other solution for us to have a blank field for the price where customers can define the price they want to pay for this product?
I'm sure there are more sophisticated solutions but you actually do this with variants. Add an option called Price and then make one called Free and one $1 and then set the appropriate price for each variant. Then just make sure your quantity selector is on and you're good to go!
Hello, there!
My name is Ren from the Shopify support team. Thanks for your question! I'd love to help out here.
We do in fact have an app that can help you set this up called Pay What You Want. The app enables you to set a minimum price and encourages your customers to pay what they want for the product. You mentioned that your products were in digital format which works nicely as Pay What You Want is also compatible with the Digital Downloads app.
Giving away digital products is an excellent way to grow your email list for marketing down the line. Have you thought about how you want to utilize your customer emails for updates or product promotions? Check out our guide - Email Marketing 101 to learn how to build lists and create effective campaigns.
Also, before you make the product available, be sure to set up your welcome emails! You can learn about why they're important and see examples to inspire you here.
If you haven't already looked into an email marketing app, consider Klaviyo or Seguno - which are both free up to 250 contacts. Let me know if you have any questions on how to get started with the steps above!

@Ren Wondering if there is an analogous replacement for pay what you want as it looks like it no longer exists. Looking for customers to be able to set the amount they want to place for the purchase of an item. Thank you!
Hello @cbellis,
Thanks for the question! At this time, the Shopify App store offers two "Pay What You Want" type apps.
Pay What You Want - Allows you to welcome negotiation with an 'Ask Your Price' button. You set a price range with minimum and maximum values, and the customer has to enter an amount to see if it is acceptable, increasing the likelihood of conversions.
Pay Your Price - Enables customers to decide themselves how much money they want to spend for your products and make the purchase at whatever price they want.
Each app costs approximately the same per month and they both offer free trials to let you take them for a spin. You can click on the links above for full details and to compare their individual features.
