It's absolutely possible to activate PayPal while you are on a free trial. Please note that in order to activate your checkout, you must activate your subscription by choosing a plan. 

This is still possible to do during your free trial period, and you will not get charged for your subscription within that time frame. At that point, you can choose to cancel your subscription after your trial period or continue with your chosen plan.
