I have a couple of products which are custom printed by a Print on Demand supplier. This means they take a few days to be produced. Some customers pick our expedited shipping option which would normally mean I send items the next day. Sadly, this isn't possible on these items so I have to refund the difference each time.
Is there any way to limit which shipping options are available for specific products?
I have a feeling I may just have to remove the option from the site while these products are on sale (they're doing very well at the moment, and its just one customer in every 20 or so who picks the more expensive shipping).
Karlie here from the Shopify Guru Team! There are a couple of options for you to consider if you'd like to set up certain shipping rates for specific products. Your first option would be to enable Locations with Shopify. Locations allows you to set up different locations in your Admin which would allow you to track inventory and fulfill products at different locations. Your location options can be any where you manage stock or inventory, in your case, you could have one location set up for your print-on-demand supplier. We have a really great guide, here, that you can check out which will help you enable Location in your Shopify Admin.
Another option would be to use an app to allow you to customize your shipping options. I would recommend checking out an app like; Advanced Shipping Rules, Advanced Shipping Manager, Better Shipping, and Bespoke Shipping.

Our app, Intuitive Shipping, can easily handle this type of setup. I would recommend using our feature set to your full advantage and still offering expedited shipping at checkout, even if the POD items are in the cart, and adding a custom description that says something like "The X is being custom made just for you and will ship in X days". This gets your customers most of their order faster, and also controls their expectation at checkout so you don't have to refund the difference. It's important to note that with all third-party shipping calculation apps, Shopify requires that you have their third-party carrier rates feature. If you are on the Advanced plan or higher, this is included in your plan. If you are on the Basic or Shopify plan, this will cost you an extra $20/mo or you can get the feature added for free if you switch to annual billing, while also saving 10% on your Shopify subscription.
This was super helpful - now if someone buys one of my print on demand items, they don't get the option of the expedited delivery.
However, if they buy one item from my main location (my in-stock items), and one from the print on demand location, they get double charged on standard delivery. I've named them the same, so when I add the two items it just shows as the same-named charge, but it comes up twice.
Is there any way to avoid this? It's not super urgent, I can manually refund anyone who pays too much and its not going to happen all that often (people usually pick just print on demand, or just stock items) but it might put people off of checking out.
