Accepting credit cards, warehouses, and shipping and fulfilling orders
Hi I'm selling digital products.
To avoid tax liability I want to exclude certain countries and states in some countries from purchasing.
For example, say I want people located in Saskatchewan (Canada) and India not to be able to make a purchase.
How do I do that?

Hi @haweiko,
Thank you for reaching out to the Community. I'd be happy to provide some assistance with this request, to ensure it gets resolved.
As digital goods are taxed based on the ‘place of use or receipt’ (i.e the customer’s billing or shipping address), you cannot restrict them from being purchased in certain countries. While I can completely understand how that may not be ideal, I'd encourage you to review our Digital Product Taxes document for more information on how to ensure taxes are being correctly charged for those products.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Hey @Blair thanks for the response. That's a bummer, not gonna lie. EU VAT is not an issue for me. Sales tax and GST in the US, Canada and UK is.
The Avalara integration is too expensive for me at the moment, they charge 3500€ per country/ year.
I had a call with Stripe the other day for their product https://stripe.com/tax . I can not use it myself, because Shopify is a Stripe customer. Is it possible to see/ activate tax obligations/ thresholds around the world, just like their product does? Unfortunately, in Shopify, this stripe feature is only available for US sales.
Hey there @haweiko - I'd be happy to expand on this topic a bit more for you.
To clarify, you can restrict the markets a product is available to based on country (not province or state) in the Markets settings in your admin. Allowing you to quickly restrict products based on the customer's location. Learn more: Publishing products with Market.
You can also create tax overrides at a country/province/state level in your admin under Settings > Taxes. This allows you to set specific unique tax rates for specific products. Learn more: Tax overrides and exemptions.
Setting up takes appropriately can be a bit complicated so we do encourage you to connect with our authenticated chat support team for further assistance, as they can review your product availability and tax settings with you directly.
