Can individual sellers in China use PayPal for customer payments?

Can individual sellers in China use PayPal for customer payments?

Hi, as a new seller in China who just started the 14-day trial, I'm wondering how I'm going to receive payments from customers?  I'm an individual and don't own a company. I read that only sellers with a PayPal business account can use PayPal to receive payments. Is that true?  If so, what are my payment options since I don't have a company?

Thank you so much.

Hello @lucas197!

When it comes to processing and receiving payments from your customers, you will need to use a payment gateway. The gateways that you can use depend on the country that you're operating in, so since you have mentioned that you're in China, I have a list of gateways available in your region here

You will find that PayPal is indeed one of the available payment methods for you - so I just wanted to confirm for you that you don't necessarily have to operate as a company in order to use a PayPal business account. The business account refers to it being used for business transactions, such as processing payments on your store - and it is possible to do this as a sole trader. I have a guide for you on how to set up the PayPal gateway on Shopify here

If you would like to go with a different gateway from the list, then you will need to go through the setup for that third party gateway on their website first, and afterwards you can follow these steps here to connect it to Shopify.

How is your 14 day free trial going so far? Is there something that you're having issues with? I understand that setting up a new store can be overwhelming with everything that goes into it, so I recommend you take a look at our Shopify Blog article on How to Start an Online Store - where we show you step-by-step everything that you need to do.

Dear Lana,

Thank you so much for your detailed reply. It's really helpful.

I have tried to upload a listing and the status says" Draft".  Does this mean I have to buy a plan before my listings can become active?

Thank you.

Lucas

I am glad my guide was helpful for you!

As for the status of the product, when you create new products you will find that they are first in a Draft state, regardless of your plan. You're able to change your product's availability settings by taking the following steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > All products.

  2. Click the product's name to open its details. The product is available to the sales channels listed in the Product status section.

  3. Set the product status as active.

  4. Click Manage.

  5. Select the channels and apps to make the product available to.

  6. Click Done.

  7. Click Save.

Please do note that on the trial plan, you are unable to make sales as the checkout is disabled. In order to start making sales, you will need to choose from one of our available plans
