Create more than 1 automatic discount code

Hi.

I was trying to create a second automatic discount code in my store but I got an error. I would like to know more about this and why it tells me to select another date as shown in the attached image. I know that there is this "buy x get y" discount available in shopify aside from the discount code that I will provide. Aside from this, is it possible to add another discount code?

Thank you,
YM

Hi YM,

Nick here from Shopify.

Within the Shopify admin, it is only possible to have one active automatic discount code at any given time. The reason being is customers cannot apply more than one discount code for an order and automatic discounts take precedence over regular discount codes. Something to remember is that you can have multiple active discount codes but customers can only apply one per order.

Shopify has a helpful document going into more detail on automatic discounts which you can see here.

Your best bet in this instance might be to check out some of the discount apps on the Shopify app store to see if they can add to what you are looking to do overall. Some of the best/ most popular discount apps can be found below:

Hopefully this answers your question and points you in the right direction for best next steps. Any other questions, just let me know.

All the best, Nick

Hello

I realize you are looking for a way to use discount deals. You can use other discount methods. Discount code is great but it is only shown on the checkout page. I found a discount app and it can show discount price on homepage, product pages, and checkout page. It is Discount Mater.

Don't hesitate to install it. You can try a free plan to check features.

Very lame, and very weak. K-Mart's web site could do this, not sure why Shopify can't.  It's a simple matter of if-this, then-that.

My guess here is that such limitations as only allowing one 'automatic discount', stem from Shopify's unwillingness to upset their 3rd party app developers.

Shopify's app store is teaming with 3rd party (and predominantly) paid apps that enable people to have multiple tiered discounts, and some of the smaller app developers would potentially go out of business overnight if Shopify allowed us to have more than one automatic discount in-house.

It's a viscous circle in which Shopify have created for themselves by having their app store. All these paid 3rd party apps that do tiered discounts are extremely clunky - one day they work, then upon a theme update or a theme refresh they are suddenly rendered dysfunctional, thus leading to the requirement of custom injections of code to make them work again, code of which sometimes messes up the entire structure and functioning of some merchants stores. Even when the apps do work as stipulated by the developer, literally all of these discount apps take away some other natural functionality of your store's cart/checkout flow as a result, reducing the overall quality of the store's shopping experience.

One thing I've learnt in my 10 years of using Shopify is - use as little 3rd party apps as possible, because in the end, the apps either stop functioning one day, or simply disappear from the app store altogether and thus are no longer updated or supported.

I would think it inevitable that Shopify will bite the bullet on this limitation and allow us merchants to create more than automatic discount and thus have 'proper' tiered discounts on bulk quantity purchases. But when that day will arrive is unpredictable. Heck I've waited 10+ years just to have any automatic discount at all!

Very well put - I too waited 7 years for them to add a "cost" option so that we could have a simple cost of goods sold function.  the app they recommended for it before (Profiteer) was beyond useless.

For all it's problems, Shopify is still (in my opinion having managed over 15 retail premises and website, as well as 7 other e-commerce sites) the easiest to use and best value for money.

But yeah, really need to add this to the roadmap, Shopify.

To be fair, K Mart is a multi billion dollar company who use a custom built website - trying to compare Shopify to it is a bit unfair.

The beauty of Shopify is being able to create an exceptionally functional and beautifully designed store front with easy management.

Yes, it does lack certain features (I too am looking for a method of creating multiple automatic discount codes), but I wouldn't use K Mart as an example of functionality as K Mart aren't a web development service.

It’s totally fair to compare a retailer’s website to the online retail platform company that powers the sites for some big companies — especially when pointing out features we would like. Also, Shopify is a billion-dollar-company by revenue, and has a market cap of $45B.

In all seriousness, this is a change that would take very little effort to implement as the rules associated wouldn’t be complicated. As another user pointed out, it’s likely not being done as to not anger their app marketplace providers.

Yes it is very lame that shopify can't implement a tiered automatic discount system.  Non of the app developers can do this properly with the junk they're putting out.  Shopify, it's time to implement it as a standard feature.

We are new to Shopify and would also love ability to stack discounts, have tiered pricing, etc. I think I will try Discount Ninja free trial to check that out.

Hi JoeB-co,

I found a cost effective app that allowed me to stack automatic discounts on each other on the Shopify App store. It's by a company called "Smarty Marketing LTD" and the app is called Smarty Discounts. The logo is a black box with a yellow elephant in it.

Free for a couple of weeks and then $9.99 thereafter, super simple to use and I now have around 30 automatic discounts that can be used in the same cart at the same time.

Has massively increased the average spend on my site.

Hope this helps!

So, if we wanted to run a promotion where a customer spends X, and they receive a discount of X, and the discount increases with the more they spend, would the discount app. that you mention handle that? Express does this all the time. If you spend $75, you get a $20 discount, spend $150 and get $55, so on and so forth. It doesn't appear that the regular discount feature in Shopify works properly. Correct? We will need an app like the Smarty app you mentioned?

Yes, it does cater for tiered scenario based discounts.

I found the most important thing from this app was the ability to have multiple discount scenario's being used in the same cart.

Yes, you can do tiered discounts I believe. I have not done that, but it
appears it does have that capability.

You could set your discount code and apply minimum spend for example 15% off minimum purchase of £55. So it automatically applies it when they spend over a specific amount. An idea would be to set multiple discount codes for example:

code1 - 15% off £55

code2 - 20% off £145

and so on to encourage customers to spend more.

The buy X get Y applies to specific products. In your scenario you could also use that as customer buys: select collection 'All products' (or create one first if you don't have one) and customer gets: product or collection again at % discount price.

A question from me please, if anyone knows. Can customers use multiple codes of different type in one order? For example a free delivery code and a % discount code? I know they can't use more than one code per order but I'm not sure if that also applies to different types of discounts.

It is pathetic that Shopify cannot do this easy function.
They would rather let merchants pay extra and find a not-so-native app to workaround. Frankly, these workaround usually hurt user experience and it risky to business.

Hi Nick,

I just discovered the magic on automated discount codes, got uber excited and was surprised not many people talk about it as it eliminates the need of having many unnecessary apps or plug-in which only slow down your website.

But then my excitement of automated discount codes died as soon as it rose up, simple because I cannot add more than 1, I thought maybe a premium membership will solve that, apparently that too does not allow it.

Nick lets be honest here and realise that It is about time that MULTIPLE automated discount codes are able to be added. (even if it is introduced in the premium and not the basic membership at first)

Specially when the automated discount code is applied on individual items separately, where they do not overlap or effect each other.

I want to run a buy 3 for a cheaper price, on two separate products which have nothing to do with each other, and I am not allowed to. Trust me, it will not break the website by allowing both automated codes to run parallel to each other.

(and if the customer add those separate products into one order, then just simply don't apply the discount, the customer will learn themselves that for the discount to work, they must initiate checkout on these items separately, they are humans and not BOT after all.)

Kind Regards,

Addie

Hey, appreciate this post is fairly old now but I see it's still active and we've just been through the process of creating a means to do this.

What we do is allow the creation of discount 'Stacks'. These stacks are used to then calculate savings as the customer shops. When they checkout, a code is dynamically generated with those savings - hence rolling up all the savings as one automated discount. Since it's a generated code, it can be removed by the customer if they have a better code to hand.

Key advantages over Shopify's current automated discount:

- Allows multiple

- Allows notifications of savings in realtime

- Allows removal in checkout if the customer has a better code

App is Stackable - Multiple Discounts

Hi there

This option makes it difficult to run multiple discounts on a day like black friday where you want to run different % discounts on certain items

Will shopify change this at all
