customer notes work if you view your cart, but if you directly to order, there is no notes box

I am using studio theme.   Customers have said there is no notes area when checking out.  if i do a fake order and go to view my cart, there is a notes area (I have checked this option in settings).  But if i go directly to checkout without viewing my cart, there is no notes area for customers to add notes.

What you are noting is expected behavior, the Shopify checkout flow does not have a notes field. This is not something that can be added to the checkout flow either, unless you have upgraded to Checkout Extensibility (PLUS only). 


I recommend directing customers to the cart page for adding notes, or if you need customization information for some/all products to look at adding a notes field on the product page itself.
