Did I mess up my customer's order by marking it as fulfilled?

I am new! I see an order in Shopify, and I then notice I've been paid for it already. So, I figure it's time to mark it as fulfilled, as I believe it's already in the fulfillment process with Kin Custom (as I made all orders auto-fill) and on its way to the customer. I then see that no orders are pending. No shipping for the order. Did I screw up my customer's order by marking it as fulfilled?  Help. I feel like a fool.

Hey @junglebeach, first I want to say don't beat yourself up about making a mistake like this. I not only work for Shopify but have my own store and even I make mistakes sometimes. The biggest of businesses make mistakes, and that's okay. 

 

When you mark an order as fulfilled it usually will allow you to cancel the fulfillment, there are some cases that it won't but you should always try that first. Since you said you are using Kin Custom for your fulfillment theres a chance it cannot be changed but you should be able to contact them to let them know that the order was not fulfilled. They might have their own process around this so it's always good to ask questions when you're not sure. You can read more about the fulfillment process within Shopify here.

 

If you have your notifications set up to automatically send an email when an order is marked as fulfilled, then the customer could have received an email with that information. It won't have any tracking information included since the order was not shipped. When the order has actually shipped be sure to email the customer with the tracking code and any other important information, just so they are not confused and know what to expect.
