Why are repeat customers receiving direct deposit errors on Shopify?

I have direct deposit set up on my website but have noticed that some customers receive an error message. 

If they select Direct Deposit then 'complete order' button the page just reloads and the search bar has an Error - Payment message (that's all it says). 

After much testing I've discovered it seems to only be happening for repeat customers who've paid via direct deposit in the past. 

Previous orders have been marked manually as paid so there isn't any outstanding on their customer profile. 

Is this a common error for direct deposit/manual payment and are there any suggestions to fix this?
