Does Shopify Pay store customer card information for future orders?

I use Shopify Pay and a customer contacted me to say she had placed an order and at payment went through with a stored card - she did not insert her numbers. I am sure that is not correct and I'm hoping you are able to confirm that Shopify do not store card numbers.

It was her first order with me so cannot see how she could have entered her number previously unless she has bought something from another outlet using the Shopify platform - which is quite possible.

Thank you.

Hey, @Clodbuster!

When a customer opts into Shop Pay, their customer information—specifically their email address, credit card, and shipping and billing information—is stored so they can save time when they check out using this accelerated payment method on any store that has it. It's likely they have opted into Shop Pay when previously purchasing from another Shopify store.

I understand how your customer would feel jarred by the stored personal information, however, you can reassure them that their data is secure. Our platform, including Shop Pay, is PCI Compliant. We don't ever access Shop Pay payment information directly. The data stored is encrypted and is not easily accessible, even by us. Only the customer has access to their personal details when they enter the code that is sent to their mobile phone when completing an order with Shop Pay.

Here's a list of the features of Shop Pay that you're welcome to share with your customer and on your website. I suggest encouraging the customer to continue using Shop Pay for a convenient shopping experience, but if they wish to opt out, they can do so by visiting this link.
