Enter partial payment for a draft order BROKEN?

I want to create a draft order in Order and then apply a partial payment for it.  Shopify Help Center says I can do that, see here: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/orders/create-orders#accept-payment

It says:

"Steps:
Open the order from the Drafts page in your Shopify admin.
Click Collect payment.
Click Mark as paid.
Optional: If the Amount received value is different that the amount that you received, then update the value.
Click Create order."

BUT! after I click "Mark as paid" it never gives the opportunity to update the value that I received, as far as I can see.  It only allows the full amount to be marked as paid.

Is there a setting somewhere that controls this or am I missing something or is this broken?

At this time, it's not possible to assign a partial payment to a draft order. To reference the steps you outlined above, those are in regards to marking an order as 'paid', not recording partial payment. When you select 'Mark as Paid', the workflow assumes that payment has been collected entirely for the draft order, and then turns in into a standard order. 

We've received feedback around requesting this functionality from several merchants across all of our support channels in the past, and we're always happy to collect feedback and pass it along so our developers know what sort of updates would bring value to our merchants. I'm happy to go ahead and pass your feedback along for our developers for their consideration, though I can't promise what the outcome from sharing the feedback may be!

As for ways you could track and collect this partial payment external to the available draft order functionalities, you could look into the following:
 

- Third Party Apps

- Create a new draft order to capture this initial partial payment

- Cancel the existing draft order and create a new one that represents the partial payment

- Accept and track payment outside of Shopify without marking the draft as paid until the customer provides all of the funds related to the order

This is unfortunate. We recently signed up for Retail as we are primary Brick and Mortar. Setting up a Draft is the only way to actively have Invoices and now we arent even allowed to take partial payments? How can you advertise retail if you can provide the simplest retail functions?
Am I missing something here? Is shopify working on this?
