Get 3D Secure with Stripe on a Shopify ecommerce

Hi,

I am looking to implement 3D Secure on my Shopify website. I already use Stripe but cannot find any option to require 3D Secure. Implementing this option is very important because it transfers the liability in case of fraud to the bank.

I can see that Stripe has a doc to implement 3D Secure but it is quite complex: https://stripe.com/docs/sources/three-d-secure

How can I activate this option?

Hi there!

My name is John and I'm a Guru here at Shopify!

Thanks for taking the time to post here on our merchant forums. 🙂

At the moment, there are only a few gateways that offer 3D secure checkout functionality on Shopify.

As Stripe is not currently one of those options; it would not be possible to use this functionality with the Stripe checkout.

Third-party gateway integrations like this are created and maintained by the gateways themselves, rather than Shopify; so if you'd like you can contact Stripe to ask them to consider adding this feature in future to their integration.

For now, if you'd like to have 3D secure in place on your Shopify you would need to consider adding one of the gateways linked above. 🙂

Regards,
John

Currently using Shopify Payments.

We use SagePay on our other platforms - seriously are you not going to implement the 3d secure functionality through ShopifyPayments?

Have Shopify / stripe ever figured out 3D secure ?

im using POS and it’s very embarrassing when customers give me there card and it won’t work even though they have plenty of money in bank , it just declines

is it Shopify trying to push us to use Shopify payments?

I have my Shopify synced with xero also , I had to take my payment via xero link today ( which is connected to the same stripe account as Shopify ) 3 d secure worked fine , pop up came up and client gave me the text message code

this proves it’s Shopify is the issue ..

Shopify payments is too expensive for debit cards , I pay less than €1 for each for all debit card transaction no matter what the value is

Shopify is 1.6 %

Since we are paying extra for Shopify POS Pro nowadays , it might be time to start using vend 👍👍

can the Shopify team shine a 💡 on above

Hi @Rbed21 and Shopify,

Did you ever get this to work? Are you able to use Stripe with the payments.json endpoint and get back a 3DS redirect URL in the `next_action` field?

We've been having issues for months with this not happening. Both test and real transactions and test and real stores all suffer from the same issue where no redirect URL is provided to us in the response or headers, but Shopify still processes the payment. Sadly the transaction fails and we consistently get the same error message back for the transaction:

Cannot transition status via :mark_as_errored from :redirect_required (Reason(s): Provider can't be blank, Checkout can't be blank, Checkout credit card can't be blank, Payment attempt can't be blank)

Thank you very much for your reply.

So if I am correct, the add-on is developed by Stripe and I should only talk to them to see if they can implement 3D Secure?

Acording to Stripe this information seems to be incorrect. Below is the answer I got from Stripe:

Stripe does not maintain any integrations. We provide the information necessary to make a Stripe integration, but the creation of the integration itself is entirely up to the merchant. You can view our integration resources at the following link:

https://stripe.com/docs/quickstart

Many merchants prefer to do as you've done and instead of creating a Stripe integration (or paying a developer to make one), they'll make use of an existing e-commerce platform (in this case, Shopify) that provides a Stripe integration for them. In these cases as its the platform that has created the integration, they are the ones responsible for any changes that may be required.

As far as Stripe is concerned, you're perfectly able to implement 3D Secure as part of your checkout process. You can read exactly on how to do this at the link below:

https://stripe.com/docs/sources/three-d-secure#when-to-use-3d-secure

However, to do this your integration need to be making use of Stripe.js and Elements. I can't comment on whether or not Shopify are using these as part of their integration. If they're not, you won't be able to implement 3D Secure using the method. This means you would either need to have a new integration that makes use of Stripe.js and Elements, or you'd need to reach out to Shopify and see if they would be willing to devise a method in which you can use 3D Secure using the integration they've created.

So could you please verify who is maintaining this integration and ask to add 3D secure?

Hi there,

We've been using Payzen for more than a year (French-based payment gateway) and it provides 3Dsecure integrated with Shopify. It's really marked the end of frauds and nightmares for us. Feel free to reach out to them on behalf of me, they don't appear yet on the list of 'public' payment gateways as Shopify requires a few dozen customers to be using the platform to be listed there.

https://payzen.eu/en/contact/

Hope this will help merchants who are in the same situation as we were last year...

Cheers

Hello There,

we run on Stripe and we noted that the 3D secure code will be mandatory for EU merchants at the end of THIS month,

is there anything Shopify is doing to be compliant?

how can we apply to the 3D secure code V. 2 since now?

thank you for your kind answers,

Shopify Gurus, please answer!
