Getting Daily payouts, despite settings for Monthly Payouts.

We got a daily payout for 4 days in a row mid-month, despite our payout settings to be monthly. We've had these settings for years, unchanged, and never had this issue. When I spoke to support, they only had boilerplate answers:

The recent occurrence of daily payouts, despite your settings being configured for monthly payouts, can be attributed to the operational changes in Shopify Payments. Shopify Payments in the United States utilizes multiple payment processing partners. This can lead to receiving payouts sooner than the scheduled date and potentially more than one payout per day, even if your settings are configured for monthly payouts. Since you have not changed your settings recently, it is possible that this is a new operational adjustment by Shopify Payments that affects how payouts are processed.

I reviewed the orders on the payouts, and see no pattern or particular processor or bank that is triggering it...

Anyone else running into this?  They are going to get back via email, but I'm looking to see if it is a more widespread issue.

Hi @dooug

This definitely sounds frustrating, especially when you've had your payout settings on monthly for years without any issues. It’s weird that Shopify suddenly started sending payouts daily without you making any changes. Since you’ve already spoken with support and they’re looking into it, I’ll share a few things you can check while waiting for their response.

Possible Reasons & Things to Check:

  1. Recent Changes in Shopify Payments System – Sometimes, Shopify updates their system, and it can cause temporary payout irregularities. Even if you haven’t changed anything, it’s possible that Shopify Payments made an internal adjustment affecting your payout schedule.
  2. Bank Processing Differences – While you mentioned there’s no clear pattern, some banks handle bulk transactions differently. It’s rare, but a bank might process payouts separately if there's an issue on their end.
  3. Shopify Payments Threshold Issues – If you process high-volume transactions, Shopify Payments may auto-adjust payout frequency in rare cases due to risk assessment or compliance measures. You might want to check if your recent transactions triggered any unusual flags.
  4. Third-Party Payment Providers – If you’re using multiple payment processors (like PayPal, Stripe, etc.), check whether these payouts are coming directly from Shopify Payments or another gateway. Some processors have their own payout rules, which can override Shopify’s standard settings.

What You Can Do:

  • Double-check your payout settings in Settings → Payments → Shopify Payments → Manage to confirm it still shows "Monthly." Sometimes, a temporary glitch can visually show the correct setting but process it incorrectly in the backend.
  • Look at the payout details (in the Payouts section) to see if there’s a note or pattern indicating why it was split.
  • Ask Shopify Support for a Manual Review – If this is an internal system bug, they might need to escalate it to their financial team for a deeper check.

Since Shopify support is getting back to you via email, I’d recommend keeping a close eye on their response. If they confirm this is a system-wide issue, they might provide a workaround or an estimated fix time.

If you (or anyone else reading this) have also run into this, drop a comment—might help confirm if this is a broader Shopify Payments issue.

If you need any other assistance, feel free to reply and I will try my best to help.
Best regards,
Daisy

Yeah,  Shopify support did a manual review, and had a similiarly vague (no precise reason given) answer:

I've been able to confirm that the payouts that were not released on your usual schedule are managed by our backup payment processor. This processor completes payouts within 3 business days and reconciles payments on a different schedule than our main processor. As a result, payouts are released in separate batches and can have reschedules applied if required by the backup processor.

I can confirm there is nothing wrong with your Shopify Payments account or payouts.

While this may cause changes in how you receive your payouts as this backup processor doesn't currently have the option for custom payout schedules, our use of multiple payment solutions is meant to provide the most reliable and effective transaction processing to decrease declining transactions and other processing errors.

The problem hasn't occurred again. *Shrug*

Seeing the same here since January 25th. Have gotten one monthly deposit for the past 3 years, now were get one nearly everyday. Rather inconvenient from a paperwork aspect.
