Accepting credit cards, warehouses, and shipping and fulfilling orders
I would like to offer half-price shipping to my customers in Canada, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this in Shopify other than manually refunding shipping for each order. I would like to see something more automatic. How can I set this up automatically?

Ryder here, from the Social Care Team at Shopify. Thanks for posting! I'd be happy to elaborate on how you're able to set up your shipping settings through the Shopify Admin. Are you currently using manual shipping rates, or carrier calculated rates?
If you're using carrier calculated rates, or calculated rates through Shopify Shipping (which includes USPS, DHL Express, or UPS for the United States and Canada Post for Canada) then these shipping prices are automatically calculated from the shipping carriers themselves. You can adjust the rate to charge half price by going into your Settings > Shipping and clicking Edit in the Canadian shipping zone section. Under Calculated rates, you can then choose to Edit and make the necessary rate adjustments in the pop-up. In this case, you'll want to type -50 in the percentage field, as such:
If you're using manual shipping rates for your Canadian customers, you can offer your customers a flat rate based on either weight or price of the order. To do this, you'll need to go into your Settings > Shipping and click Edit in the Canadian shipping zone section. Then you can click Add rate next to Price based rates or Weight based rates and create ranges for your shipping cost. Here's an example of how you could set up price based shipping rates:
Minimum order price $0 - Maximum order price $50 charges $15 shipping rate
Minimum order price $50 - Maximum order price $100 charges $10 shipping rate
Minimum order price $100 - Maximum order price with No limit offers free shipping
You'll be able to create similar ranges for weight based rates. I hope this helps to answer your question and give you clarity as to the options you have given your current shipping setup. If there's anything else I can clarify, please let me know!

Thanks very much for the quick reply! That looks like it will work well for the calculated rates that we are using.
Is it possible to apply this discount to calculated rates only when the total purchases are over a specific dollar amount?
Another option that would work:
if I set up a price based rate for lower amounts, will the calculated shipping only display for the higher priced orders?
No problem, we're always happy to help! These are great questions, @Elanag. Because carrier calculated shipping prices are automatically calculated from the shipping carriers themselves, it's not possible to create ranges that will be prompted depending on the total cost of the order. Adding priced based rates for lower amounts likely won't work for your business either, because carrier calculated shipping will display for all orders. This means that if a total order price meets the price based rate conditions, it'll display both the price based rate and carrier calculated rate for your customers to choose from:
That being said, if you're interested in a paid app for this, it looks like the Advanced Shipping Rules app by Bambri can help you out. With this app, you'd be able to set up a variety of shipping rules. For example, subtracting 50% from your shipping cost when total order price is over $200. The app offers a 7 day free trial for you to test it out and see if it's a suitable option for your business. After the 7 days, it will charge you $9/month USD. Could this be a possible solution for your shipping pricing needs? Please let me know if there's anything you'd like me to elaborate on.

Thanks for the information. It's too bad that this functionality is not available. I'll just have to find another way around it.
Although the app you suggested sounds good, I had a bad experience with a different app that I installed so for now, I would prefer to just use standard Shopify functionality, especially since we are a really new business. I don't want to cause instabilities at this point.

I have another question on a possible solution to this shipping rate that I am trying to set up. I would like to set up a discount code to offer half-price shipping to Canadian shoppers. It looks like I can set up free shipping but I don't see how I can set up the code to offer half-price shipping. Could you tell me how I can do that?

Rather than going with discount coupons, you can create an adjustment and show this adjusted rate only for a defined price range. This can be achieved with the Multi Carrier Shipping label app. Here, an automation rule in the app can achieve this.
Thanks for the information. I don't want to use any third party applications on our site. I had installed a common used one in the past and discovered that it destabilized our shopify site and created additional text artifacts on various pages. At this point, I only want to use out-of-the box functionality from Shopify.

At this time there isn't a way to setup discount codes for shipping rates natively within Shopify, aside from the free shipping option. If you're not interested in potentially using a third party app to create advanced shipping rules, I'd be happy to submit a feature request regarding this option on your behalf.
We can't guarantee this feature will be released, or when it might happen - however, we do address all feature requests on a popularity basis. This means the more merchants that submit a feature request regarding the same topic, the higher of a likelihood of it being a project our development team takes on.
