How can I correctly set up shipping profiles based on package size and weight?

I could really do with some help setting up shipping profiles. I am based in the UK and the issue I'm having is based on the fact that price of shipping is not determined by the weight only but by the size of the package too. So a postage for a package that weighs e.g. 150g can be considerably different depending on its size. I sell internationally and I'm really struggling to find the way how not to either overcharge or undercharge my customers.

Depending on the courier company you use, you might be charged either volumetric or dead weight. In some cases the courier will look at both and charge whichever is greater. Without knowing which courier company you use its hard to give advice. Once solution might be to use live shipping rates to try and avoid the underage or overage you mention in your post

I use Royal Mail and they use 'dead weight' but the shipping price also depends on the size of the package as I mentioned above.

Essentially I need to be able to set up shipping profile that takes into consideration a world zone, weight and size of the package. At the moment I only managed to set these up based on the shipping zone and weight.

Hi @arcalliq

With Shopify, you can only set weights & get weight-based rates for your products. For dimension-based rates the only workaround is an app like Multi-Carrier Shipping Label App. The app helps you to configure dimensions of your products & get accurate rates.

Thank you. That's helpful - at least i know it cannot be done. Considering most postal carriers base their prices on both weight and size of packages, this really should be addressed by Shopify.

So glad to find this post? Did you find a solution? You're right, 200g large letter and 200g small parcel are very different prices. I cant just charge the larger price or i'll miss out on sales by massively overcharging. Help!

unfortunately, no, I still have not found the solution and I'm starting to think Shopify might have been a wrong choice for me. Setting shipping profiles properly is an important part of running worldwide business so I cannot believe that Shopify do not pay attention to this.

I'm starting to think the same. I have experience with Wordpress and none of this stuff was an issue and you most certainly don't have to pay extra for simple things like this.

I am having this exact issue and I have just made a post about it too. I also found posts from 2020 with nearly 100 replies from people with the same issue.

Why is Shopify not fixing this problem when so many people need it? I pay £25 per month to have headaches like this.

A shipping and fulfillment app will support volumetric and dead weights which will solve your problem and will provide you with accurate shipping rates, Shopify shipping is very basic and will never be as comprehensive as a dedicated shipping app such as Starshipit - https://apps.shopify.com/starshipit

There is no way I'm going to pay $30 a month for something that others provide for free, especially as proper setting of shipping costs is crucial and integral part of online business. I don't want a third party solution to problem that needs to be addressed by @Shopify.

In addtition, the app that you linked, does not address the problem at all.

Same here. On top of the already high Shopify subscription there is no way I am spending a single penny. The £25 I pay pre month should include all of these basic features. @arcalliq can you and anyone else reading this, contact support and ask them to make a "frustration report" (I think it is called) so they can take details from you requesting this feature.

I think it is already very poor of Shopify to ignore this especially since used have requested it for years.

I'm ditching Shopify and heading back to Wordpress.
