Accepting credit cards, warehouses, and shipping and fulfilling orders
How can I remove Shop Pay payment option from my store? I do not use Shopify Payments. I use debut theme.
Hey, @TiyeH!
This is Summer from the Social Care team at Shopify. Thanks for your question!
Shop Pay can only be enabled when your store uses Shopify Payments, regardless of the theme you use. Since your store currently offers Shop Pay, it's highly likely Shopify Payments is also currently activated in your store.
You can continue to use Shopify Payments and take advantage of its benefits while not offering Shop Pay. With Shopify Payments, you pay no transaction fees, you can [quickly and easily integrate it](https://bit.ly/3m7C2Ez) in your store, and you can have 24/7 gateway support from our support team. To continue using the gateway but disable Shop Pay, you may simply follow the steps below.
If you would like to disable Shopify Payments along with Shop Pay, you can go through the following steps:
Is there any particular reason why you wanted to remove Shop Pay from your store? If you're unaware, it does offer significant benefits as well. With Shop Pay, your customers are able to quickly complete their order in your store as they have the option to have their email address, credit card, and shipping and billing information saved. Having this option elevates the customer experience on your website and the convenience it presents can boost conversions.
If you need help with deciding whether offering Shop Pay in your store is the best option or not, please don't hesitate to respond to this post and I'll help you out further!

Hi, yes I did all of that and it still shows as an option. I was wondering if there was any coding I could use so it may be removed completely.
Thanks for getting back to me, @TiyeH!
That's certainly something we should not expect to happen if you have already disabled Shop Pay and Shopify Payments. Since this is the case, we'll need to access your account and investigate why Shop Pay is still appearing in your store. We’re not able to provide account-specific support via the Shopify Community at this time, so we’d be happy to continue assisting you through live chat, email, or callback. Please visit https://bit.ly/3cJkx8V and log in to your account to create a support request.

This issue is still happening in May of 2024. This is not a good product to endorse and does not work as expected. This software should be removed from Shopify add-on center until this has been 100% corrected. This is me wasting time with tech support and needlessly tying up labor hours on Shopify's support team. Please do the right thing for everyone here and disable this add-on. For anyone reading this: I would NOT waste your time with the "Shop Pay" add-on. It is a waste of your time and money and you will burn time trying to manage it.
I am having the same issue. It is uninstalled and inactivate but not going away. I would NOT RECOMMEND Shop pay to anyone.
I have the option UN-Checked here...
Yet it is still showing "select payment option" here.
I actually find shoppay unbearable and a nuisance. I don’t have an option to just enter my CC information and entering all my information first is a huge barrier. Managing several stores I’m confident this is the worst check out experience on the market. To make matters worse what if I’m on a laptop and trying to buy something? I keep getting a code sent to my phone which I keep downstairs. I’d rather not buy the product vs, go downstairs in search of a code. Please make this experience easier for your customers and assuMe people don’t want to use shoppay and provide easy alternatives vs forcing this down our throats.
Would love to speak with the product team to get this fixed. Thanks!
I am a customer of a store that has Shop Pay enabled. I too find it really annoying. The store is a coffee roaster with a small selection of beans and order sizes. My experience:
1. I arrive for the first time using my iPhone/Safari, select a bag of beans and hit Apple Pay, double-click and I'm done. Beans delivered the next day. Delighted!
2. After a few deliveries ordering the same beans and marvelling at the customer experience I decide to order an additional bag of beans to try them. I need to use the 'add to cart' to order two items, no worries. I go to the cart and checkout - expecting to be offered Apple Pay again. NO - I'm presented with a form to fill in. I go back and remove the second item and pay with Apple Pay. SALE LOST.
3. I decide to try again a few months later and when I get to checkout I fill in the form. I'm offered Shop Pay and since I hope this will mean I can use Apple Pay at checkout in the future I say yes.
4. Now when I visit the site the Apple Pay button is replaced by Shop Pay button and there is no way to get Apple Pay back. I don't want to use Shop Pay and can't easily see how to stop using it.
5. In desperation I switch from Safari to Chrome and visit the site again. Now I'm offered Google Pay even though I'm using an iPhone. Again no way for me as a customer to set a payment preference.
My site experience has gone from delight to annoyance. It feels like an attempt by Shopify to hijack payment business rather than allow the customer to buy as they wish.
Good to know. I am trying to disable the app and it won't go away. It's caused me so many clients to be unhappy with the orders as they send all the shipping updates to me! Shop pay only notifies me because it is reading my account instead of the customer's. It's terrible.
Can you post on here how you got rid of it? I am on with Shopify support right now. This "Shop Pay" add-on is absolute garbage.
I should perhaps update my post to let you know the store has come up with an acceptable work around. Now I see the Shop pay button and below it a button that says ‘other ways to pay’. When I click on ‘other ways to pay I get several options including Apple Pay and the Apple Pay experience is as before. So outright angry frustration is replaced by mild annoyance that there is an extra (unnecessary) click to get to Apple Pay, but at least I can pay as I wish. I haven’t found an option to remove myself from shop pay though I confess I haven’t looked very hard.
Can you explain how you went about getting this option added? The only option I see is for my customers to scroll all the way to the bottom of the Shop Pay checkout screen to a small link that says "Checkout As Guest". This is even descriptive enough to let our customers know if they click it, they will be presented with the other accelerated options.
PS. If anyone here wants to disable Shop Pay, it is as easy as going to Settings -> Payments -> Manage and then deselecting Shop Pay. It looks like you can just deselect Shop Pay now and leave Shop Pay Installments active. I am actually going to test this out now.
I'm afraid I'm just a customer of the store. I have never used Shopify as a site owner. I had a quick look at the html on the site to see if I can tell what is happening, but it's not easy. Just in case it helps I can attach a screen shot of the payment section I see
OK, I see what you are talking about. Doesn't exactly help with our issue but I do appreciate seeing that customers and merchants are all struggling with Shopify trying to force people into their payment solution. Thank you.
Then
I just noticed a couple of things. On my desktop I get something different which is a shop-pay options screen with 'check out as guest' at the bottom. When I click on that I see something very similar to the screen above (which is from my mobile). So either the mobile pages behave differently, or the site owner has hacked something to take a mobile user directly to the guest checkout page, which presumable allows Apple Pay to fill in my data.
It's all very complicated. I'm not sure why I can't just be given an option to set a preferred payment method (and an option to change it if I go off my preferred payment provider)
Yes this makes sense. If you are in the "guest" checkout, you have options for all the accelerated options. This issue is if Shopify detects browser cookie data saying that a customer has used Shop Pay checkout before, it will default to the Shop Pay checkout page instead of the "guest" checkout page. Customers have no idea what is going on here and just think that we don't offer the option for other accelerated checkout such as Apple or Google pay. Essentially they are making Shop Pay "opt out" instead of "opt in".
For a customer, you can clear all your browser cache and session data and you will be presented the guest checkout page but 99% of customers are not tech savvy enough to know what is going on and even if they are, it is a major annoyance.
I am having the same problem and have tried to resolve the issue by just removing the app. The app refuses to go away. Shop pay has sent me all of the order updates instead of clients. It's so bad for business.
I would like to also recommend Shopify Stop this anticompetitive behavior immediately. It is no surprise why they try to force my customers into their payment solution. They make a bigger cut and they get to juice their stats about how many people use Shop Pay. Yeah, because it is forced down their throats. The amount of emails I get a week as a Shopify Plus store owner about how people want to use "Apple Pay" but are not presented an option to is infuriating. Sure, there is a "checkout as guest" link hidden at the bottom of the Shop Pay checkout page but no one notices this. Shop Pay need to be opt in, not opt out! The only reason I have not disabled Shop Pay is because our customers us Shop Pay Installments but I am getting to the point that I feel like I should just disable them both. I should be able to give my own customers all the payment options that we advertise on our site.
I find that we get a lot of "in store" pick up orders through Shop Pay that are from people no where near our store. This is a huge annoyance as we have to cancel the order, and get with the customer to change it to a shippable order. From what I can tell, Shop Pay defaults to in store pick, and people just don't look that close when ordering. Huge fail by Shop Pay...
Shopify is absolutely horrible. I have a coupon code that only works when Shopify doesn't pop up. BUT IT ALWAYS POPS UP! And I can't get to a place where I can cancel. Worst app/service EVER!
Hi Summer,
I posted a question about removing Shop Pay wanting to know how it will affect the subscriptions in my store tied to it. My question hasn't been answered by anyone from Shopify yet would you mind looking at it? I'd like to remove Shop Pay as an option in checkout as soon as possible but want to know what other effects it will have in my store. My question is posted here - https://community.shopify.com/c/payments-shipping-and/will-disabling-shop-pay-affect-any-current-sub...
