How can I fix the default region value error in checkout?

Hello,
In checkout we have the regions that the store ships to and if I don't change the "Region" option, when I select to go to the next step, it gives me an error telling me to select an option, when it was already selected. Is there a way to insert a placeholder on the "Region" dropdown?

 

This only happens if I don't change the "Region" part.
