How can I manage shipping for multiple items on Shopify?

I've just done a test purchase of four items and it was treated as if it was a single item in terms of shipping.

Does the native Shopify shipping functionality not support shipping for more than one product in the same class?

If not, is there an app which will take care of this simple requirement?
