How can I set different default packaging sizes for products on Shopify?

Hello

I've just switched over to Shopify from Etsy, and am wondering if there is a way to set different default packaging sizes for products? I've entered multiple package sizes, but can't see where to link these directly to products (and can't really see what other purpose there is for this feature that lets you enter multiple package sizes, anyway). I'm using calculated shipping rates and my products span a huge range in weight and dimensions, so a single default package size to calculate shipping at checkout just charges customers either too much or too little.

Previously, this functionality was baked into calculated shipping in Etsy and *very* easy to use, so I don't know if there's something I'm missing here... Can anyone please help??

Thanks so much!

Hi @fred72,

As you have mentioned, the problem with using Shopify's default box size is that you will be undercharging/overcharging for some orders. You will be responsible for paying the additional shipping cost, and if you overcharge for shipping, most customers will abandon their cart.

There has been a lot of queries regarding the option to add multiple package size. If you have multiple package sizes you ship with, you would need a shipping app like our Multi Carrier Shipping Label, if you are looking to charge based on the dimensional weight of the package. The benefit here is that you know you are charging the right price for shipping.

With the box packing method in the app, you can set up different boxes for your products based on the weight & dimensions. So, whenever your customer places an order, the app automatically chooses the right box and calculates the rates accordingly. Also, with the app, you can print labels, and also automate the tracking process.

Am I able to use your Multi Carrier Shipping Label app to just calculate the shipping rates based off package dimensions and weight for the customer and then use GoShippo for buying the labels?

Why does shopify not have functionality that Etsy has had for years?

What would be helpful is being able to assign different 'default' packages to different shipping profiles. We usually have an 'average' size as our default for the general shipping profile, but we have some items that are unusually large and can only go in certain boxes. We have those on a separate profile; it's just too costly to include them in the general profile as we end up having to send them separately from any other item ordered. In that case, it would be immensely helpful to be able to assign that package size to that profile, to get the most accurate rate for customers.

Just started an shopify store... and finally learned they do not want you to be able to assign multiple default packages to products of your choice. Which seems would be pretty simple to implement.  Simply put...  because they have deals with 3rd party developers in which the customer have to pay a monthly subscription to do this simple task. I already got suckered in adding easify to add the ability to have 'add on/upgrades' for some of my products. Pretty shady in my opinion....
