How can I split shipping options at checkout based on item category?

Hi. First post. I am a fine artist living & working in NYC. I'm just about ready to launch a new comprehensive fine arts website built on Shopify, covering nearly 30 years worth of art work. My site has been designed to work more like a digital coffee table monograph, with the option to purchase still available pieces, than a typical Shopify store. I am extremely pleased with where it is... except I've hit a snag in the last mile before launch!

Is there a way to have checkout parse shipping categories in order to break some items out to permit for two different shipping selections?

I've been reading all afternoon on the topic and not finding a clear answer.

A majority of what I anticipate selling are drawings, prints, and smaller affordable multiples. But I also have some larger, museum quality works that require very specific shipping and handling, including commissioned archival crating systems, etc. I and a person working in my studio were able to successfully use shipping categories to break things out so things that can be shipped affordably in something like a flat pack, double padded envelope, or telescoping tube, are priced reasonably and affordably. We devised an elaborate satisfactory scheme to price the crating and freight and archival work needed for the larger sculptures, installations, etc. via the order price.

Everything works great individually and the experience feels professional and appropriate to my industry and the buyers I anticipate interacting with except... when the bespoke category for crated art works is mixed with any other shipping category. Then the system falls apart and offers purchasers free shipping without any comment.

What I would love to do, if possible, even if it requires a modestly priced app, is to break out that final shipping category for oversized bespoke works that MUST be crated, have architectural schematics drawn up, and be truck freighted and makes the appropriate options available for those works as a separate selection.

While very few clients buying say a few several hundred dollar drawings will impulse buy a several thousand dollar sculpture, it is not unreasonable to anticipate a collector who is able to buy the larger sculpture to then look around the site and select a few additional smaller works. My current inability to split the shipping selections between the two different types of works risks losing these potential high dollar clients.

tldr; I need help finding a way to split shipping into multiple selections at checkout based on item category. Help!

This is an accepted solution.

Replying to my own post to say that I and an assistant have worked out a copywriting solution that has allowed us to overlap the varying flat shipping options to include the larger crated artworks with the smaller shipping items. And we think we've done it in a manner that is clear and concise to our potential customers.

So I no longer need the option described above: a means to break out one flat shipping category of items from the rest at checkout to permit buyers to select a separate shipping option for those. The feature would have been preferred, but the more I have read on these forums, this is an option Shopify users have been requesting since at least 2020 in some form. But it has not been included in the basic functionality.

Either way, my store is at least back on track and ready for launch soon with the copywriting work around we were able to devise.
