How do you prevent payment fraud on your online store?

Hi Fellow partners. I wondered if any of you use the CVV tan controls to ensure sales that fail authentication are not accepted? I'm trying to minimise fraudulent orders but don't want to lose potential sales either! I am adding a VPN as extra security too to the site. Just wondered others thoughts.

Hi Markssxx,

I am very happy giving you my feedback about choosing to enable Shopify Payments. Especially today when I got another chargeback procedure for an important amount. Actually I can see how, starting from the older order, each of them begin to go under a chargeback procedure. I can send you proofs if you want. If this continues I will go into deep trouble because my shop it is a small one and this is affecting me deeply.

Now, I am using Netopia Payments from some years and I had no problems as I specified in my previous message. This is the link were you can access they integration with Shopify: https://support.netopia-payments.com/en-us/article/67-implementare-shopify. I suppose that it should work with international partners considering that Shopify has worldwide clients but I have no clue how Netopia will return the amounts to you and how much time may take. I suppose you can find the information on their website.

Regarding similar experiences as mine from other Shopify clients I have no information but I am seriously looking to start a topic about it because it is outrageous what is happening. Actually, based on my short experience, you should refund and cancel all the orders (even if Shopify recommend to fulfil) but those where they specify that 3D Secure was passed but these happened to me very recently and I am waiting to see if even these will have the same issue.

This is why I would like to try starting getting information from other Shopify Payments users to see if they have the same bad experiences and opening a new topic hoping that we can convince Shopify to make the things right because, In my opinion, they are really cheating us and this is dissapointing for me because I was working quite well with them since I started the online shop some 7 years ago.

I hope this answered you questions and concerns and I am also hoping to hear about your future experiences too.

Regards,

Hi,

I used Shopify Payments for a month and I disabled it a couple of days ago because of some chargebacks. I had AVS and CVV checked. I only delivered the orders for which Shopify recommended the fulfilment. And I still got chargebacks.

The issue is that Shopify is not taking any responsibility and put us right in front of the bank in case of a chargeback. I am from Romania and I also use a local card payments processing company. I had with them a couple of claims for fraudulent orders and they asked me for proof of service: local fiscal invoice, supplier's invoice, proof of delivery, bank statement proving that the right amount was withdrawn from my account. And this was all. No refunds from me.

For the same situation Shopify is taking no responsibility even if they recommend the order fulfilment.

So, trying to answer your question, I do not know what kind of checks are they performing and if this even counts if I have them both options checked and I still got fraudulent orders. Shopify is acting like they are not in the process. They give us a tool that really has no sense, from my point of view, while they do not take any responsibility. More than this, you have to pay fees for each transaction.

For now, until they solve some issues with the account display mode (they do wrong payments, the balance is not right, the next payment amount is wrong, the displayed payment amount is not paid at the estimated date, etc) I do not recommend to use it. I also do not recommend it because the only responsible in case of a fraudulent order is only you. And the last reason is that you will never know when and how much you will have pay back because of fraudulent orders.

Sorry for the long message but I hope I answered your question.

Hi Liviud,

thank you for your really helpful response. This is really interesting because like you I have assumed that if we follow the AVS and CVV that the orders will be protected. This highlights to me a weakness in their system. Can I ask which payment processor you now use or are they just in Romania? I am adding a VPN to my store too for additional layer of security.  Maybe one of the Shopify partners can explain why this is happening. At the moment I will only service orders in the U.K. to see how it goes. Has anyone else had similar experiences or suggest a better safer system to process payments?

Thanks I have found this very useful. As you say if you get too many chargebacks it can wipe out any profit swiftly.

P.S. You can send messages to me on my email address liviu.dinca@dinra.ro and you can give it to those you may find having the same issues.

I've had good results with Kedra Shield, an anti-bot app for Shopify. It effectively blocks malicious bots by hiding your site’s content from them, which has reduced fraudulent orders without impacting real customers.  https://apps.shopify.com/kedra-shield-website-security
