How to change the default product used on the Edit packing slip template UI?

How do we change the default order that is used to preview changes in the "Edit packing slip template" UI ?

When editing the packing slip (via the "Edit packing slip template" UI) it always defaults to previewing the template changes using a very very old order from 4 years ago. That order barely has any line items or interesting details (e.g. it's an order that only has 1 item, no order notes, etc).

When editing the template, we want to pick a complex order to preview the template with...this helps us to actually test the template properly. This is especially important to us right now as we figure out how to make Shopify Bundles show up correctly in the packaging slip template (to do that, I need to preview the template with an order that has a bundle purchase!).

Hello @daveuk100,

Unfortunately, there isn’t a built-in option to choose which order gets used as the preview when editing your packing slip template. Shopify automatically uses a historical order (even if it’s an old one) to generate the preview, and there's no setting to swap that out for a more complex or relevant order.

Here’s what you can consider:

  • Feedback & Feature Request: You might want to share this feedback with Shopify—sometimes, if enough merchants request it, they’ll add more flexibility.
  • Manual Testing: For now, you might have to rely on manual testing. You could generate a PDF from an actual complex order (if that’s possible via a third-party app or via API) to see how bundles and other details are rendered.
  • Custom Preview Approach: If you’re comfortable with development, you could set up a custom page or local tool that pulls order data via the API and applies your packing slip template, allowing you to test with different orders. But that’s a bit more advanced.

I know it’s not ideal when you need to test changes with a complex order, especially for bundles. Hopefully, Shopify will add more customization options for previewing in the future.

Hope this helps clarify things!
