Is the Shop Payments gateway secure for credit card transactions?

We have been told by a customer that the Shopify payments gateway Shop Payments has been compromised/hacked and they are stealing credit card details to use later.

I have disabled Shop Payments at the moment and hope you can get back to me asap

Shop Pay does have the ability to store credit cards and use them later as part of the accelerated gateway flows. Other accelerated payment methods like Google Pay and Apple Pay do the same. It's very likely that your customer is confused about that.

That said, it's always best to follow these kind of reports through for safety and peace of mind so would suggest you contact the support team and give them as much details you have on the concern.

I can definitely understand that hearing this would make you feel uneasy about using the Shop Pay gateway, but I want to reassure you that we have not had any kind of data breach with this gateway. Maybe it would be good to ask this customer for some context around where they heard this? If they have a source perhaps? A link would really help me to investigate where this is coming from. 

As mentioned by another person above, Shop Pay does have the ability to store credit cards and use them later as part of the accelerated gateway flows - very similar to Google Pay and Apple Pay - and perhaps this is the source of confusion for this customer? If this is the case, you can reassure them that the auto fill feature is 100% expected behaviour, and we take data security extremely seriously.

This link provides more information about Shop Pay uses data, and reassures that our servers meet strict PCI compliance standards for vaulting credit card info. Payment and personal details are encrypted from end to end. The link also allows anyone to delete their data at anytime if they wish.
