Accepting credit cards, warehouses, and shipping and fulfilling orders
Hi all!
Trying to get a better handle on the fulfillment lifecycle, and hoping to "fulfill" some orders. I'd like to:
- "create" shipping labels
- confirm orders
- signal package status changes (in transit, delivered)
Does anyone have a good way to test this lifecycle with completely dummy data?
Thanks.
Hello, there!
My name is Ren from the Shopify support team with a few points of advice for you. While there isn't any one direct test for the whole process, there are a number of options available to you for testing the ordering process.
1.) Use a bogus gateway to simulate a transaction: This document explains how to activate a bogus gateway and simulate a successful transaction, failed transaction and how to place and refund a real transaction order. You can also test and see what your shipping and email notifications will appear like as well using this method.
2.) Testing Shopify Payments: If you happen to be using the Shopify Payments gateway, you can enable test mode to simulate both failed and successful transactions using test credit card numbers. You can even go so far as to simulate transactions in different currencies. Don't forget to turn off test mode when you're done!
4.) Buying and voiding a shipping label: While this isn't actually a test, you can still purchase and then void (for a refund) a shipping label to see what the process and the label look like.
5.) Use this method found in your admin to send test notifications to relevant email addresses:
6.) If you've created any test orders you can learn how to delete them here.
As for signalling package status changes, this is left up to your carrier service. There are some apps that allow you to customize and send notifications to your customers which can be helpful for products that are pre-order or are custom with some turn-around time like Custom Order Status.
I hope these suggestions help you gain a better understanding of a fulfillment life cycle. How are you finding the platform and store-building otherwise? Is there an avenue of Shopify or business you are curious about, that you'd like to learn more on?
Let me know how you make out with those options!

Hi Ren,
There is a Caution in the article "Testing Shopify Payments":
"Don't fulfill any test orders, because you are charged for any shipping labels that you purchase. If you use an app that automatically fulfills orders, then deactivate it before you create test orders."
Is it applicable as well fo orders, created by using the Shopify Bogus Gateway?
Many thanks!
Andrei
