Multiple items ordered but shipped in one box. How can I not overcharge my customers?

My website is www.cocktailbong.com I have one main item that people purchase. It ships in a large box with plenty of room for the accessories that are typically ordered along with the main item. The problem is the accessory items are all calculating as if shipped separately and the checkout is charging WAY too much for shipping. Is there a way to configure Shopify to know that the additional items purchased are going to ship in the same box with the larger main item? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi @bp238,

If you have two items within the same shipping profile and both of those products are added to a customer's cart, your shipping rates should not stack or duplicate. Any live calculated rates would be based on the default package you have on file and would assume that both items would be in the same box.

Prior to posting here, did you have your accessory items in a different shipping profile from your main item?

Please also be aware that you can mark up or discount shipping rates with Shopify Shipping, which provides you with some flexibility if you find that the rates being offered are still too high.

If you typically only sell one other product alongside your main product, you may also wish to consider bundle apps on the Shopify App Store. These apps allow you to create bundles of products and sell them as a single bundle, which can make things simpler for your customers. Some of the most popular bundle apps are the following:

You can view each app page to see a breakdown of their respective features.

Hi @bp238,

Thank you for getting in touch and outlining your issue. There's a few potential solutions to your issue here, but I just want to clarify a few things first. Please answer the following questions:

  • How many accessories do you offer for sale on your store alongside the main item?
  • Do you offer live shipping rates on your store and if so, which couriers' rates are you using at checkout?
  • Are you using any apps on your store that offer live rates at checkout, or ones that offer any other shipping-related functions?
  • Do you have the the default package details added in your shipping settings?

Once you've provided the above information I'll get back to you and offer further assistance.

Hi Victor. At this point there is only, typically, one other product that is added to the cart with the main item. If I check the main item and that item in a shipping profile, will Shopify calculate the shipping based on those two items weight but in one box? I am using Spotify shipping. No ap. USPS and UPS.

Perfect information. I did have the second item in a separate shipping profile and that was the problem...thank you!

Hi @bp238,

I'm glad that adding the products to the same shipping profile resolved the problem. I'm happy that I could offer some assistance, and please do get back in touch if you have further questions.

Hey Victor, well...someone order 7 units yesterday and we had a problem. My default shipping box is 12 x 12 x 12 inches. That box holds one main unit. That box will also hold a few of the accessory items as mentioned before. But it will only hold one main item. These main items are fairly light weighing only 2 pounds. Shopify calculated about $15.00 to ship 7 main items. We did manage to get all 7 items into one large box but the shipping was much more than $15.00. Do you have a suggestion for how to overcome this problem? Thank you!

Hi @bp238,

Thank you for outlining your problem. There will be cases where the order costs more or less to ship than what the customer has paid, and it can require a bit of trial and error to get that right. It's worth taking the time to tally up the total difference between what you have paid for shipping and what the customers have paid for shipping across a number of orders to get a better idea of what your shortfall is (or, if you find the customers are paying more, how much they may be overpaying by).

Your best bet of getting more accurate shipping rates at checkout would be to use an app like Boxify, which allows you to assign different package sizes and types to individual products and get more accurate shipping rates in general. There are also more general shipping apps such as Better Shipping and Advanced Shipping Rules that can help you gain control of your shipping rates by setting critera to generate rates in varying scenarios.

If you'd like some additional assistance, I'd also suggest reaching out to our support team directly as they can authenticate you on your account and take a closer look at your shipping setup in order to offer more specialized advice.

Hi Victor! I'm having a similar problem which is what brought me to this thread. The problem is though I can't put all the items into one shipping profile because I set up different profiles for different priced shipping items. For example the small items I sell ship for $4, the large ones say $12. Is there any way to just have shopify use the most expensive shipping profile for the order instead of adding each shipping profile cost?

I'd like a large item and small item to cost $12 to ship, not $16 (12+4)

Hi @lzrbeams,

What you are describing here is known as rate consolidation and is expected behaviour when products from multiple shipping profiles are added to a single cart. If you want to avoid this, our general guidance is to try and merge products into a single shipping profile as you should still be able to charge higher shipping rates for larger/ heavier items within the same profile.

How do you currently have your shipping rates set up? Are you using manual rates or calculated rates?
