New Markets in LATAM

New Markets in LATAM

I have my store in Chile. In Chile, and throughout Latin America, we don’t have Shopify Payments. I want to open the store in Colombia. I added the new market and installed apps so that when people visit the website from Colombia, prices are displayed in Colombian pesos. However, at checkout, the payment is still shown in Chilean pesos.

How can I ensure that the store displays prices in Colombian pesos for visitors from Colombia and that payments are processed in Colombian pesos at checkout?

As a payment gateway, I use Mercado Pago, not Shopify Payments. I am using Mercado Pago, and for currency conversion, I am using BUCKS, which is developed by Shopify.

I’ve been trying to solve this for over a month, but no one has been able to help me.

Hi @Retro4Gamers,

Thank you for reaching out to the Shopify community. I'd be glad to assist you. Could you kindly share your store URL and
password (if it’s password-protected) so I can review it and provide you with an update?

@Retro4Gamers,

Your issue occurs because Shopify’s checkout system processes payments in your store’s default currency (Chilean Pesos) when using third-party payment gateways like Mercado Pago. Since Shopify Payments is not available in Latin America, multi-currency checkout is not natively supported. Even though BUCKS converts prices on the storefront, the final checkout payment still reverts to Chilean Pesos.

Possible Solutions:

  1. Check Mercado Pago’s Multi-Currency Support

    • Contact Mercado Pago’s support and ask if they allow processing payments in multiple currencies. If they only accept payments in Chilean Pesos, this is why your checkout is reverting to that currency.
  2. Create a Separate Mercado Pago Account for Colombia

    • Some merchants solve this issue by creating a new Mercado Pago account specifically for Colombia.
    • You can then set up Shopify Markets to use this payment method only for customers in Colombia.
  3. Use Custom Checkout Redirection (Advanced Method)

    • Instead of Shopify’s checkout, you can set up a custom checkout that redirects users to a Mercado Pago payment link.
    • This requires coding and API integration, so it may not be an easy solution if you’re new to Shopify development.
  4. Upgrade to Shopify Plus (If Feasible)

    • Shopify Plus provides checkout scripts and customization options that can allow multi-currency checkout.
    • However, it is expensive ($2,000/month), making it unsuitable for small businesses.
  5. Create a Separate Shopify Store for Colombia (Last Resort)

    • If no other solution works, setting up a dedicated store for Colombia could be an option.
    • This ensures customers see Colombian Pesos throughout their experience, including checkout.
    • However, managing two separate stores can be complex and costly.
