Orders that contain preorder and in-stock products - option to charge extra for shipping if customer wants in-stock item now?

Hey guys, right now we have a policy that if a customer places an order that contains for example 1 preorder item and 1 in stock item, we will wait to ship the entire order until the preorder item is also in stock since shipping is only charged once per order.

Is there a Shopify app you guys can recommend that would allow us to give the customer the option of paying additional in postage/S&H to have the in-stock item shipped out separately? 

We could just increase our shipping rates, but we like to have low shipping rates for our customers and most are willing to wait until the preorder item is also in stock... but some want the in-stock items now. This especially applies to overseas orders where shipping can get quite expensive.
 

Anything you guys could recommend would be great here!

Hey, Chris! 

Karlie here from the Shopify Guru Team! A lot of the time merchants would mark up their shipping rates to account for any additional fees, but there is actually an app that I think could work for you. If you check out the app, Order & Product Fees, it actually works by allowing you to set a certain fee by product rules. 

Another alternative would be to contact our Shopify Experts to see if they can do some custom coding for you to create this type of functionality for you and your customers. The Shopify Experts are developers, marketers, designers and photographers that you can hire to help you with certain aspects of your storefront. 

Although Shopify doesn't currently have this type of functionality built into the admin, I can see how it would be beneficial so I would be happy to bring this feedback up to our team for you.

Hi Karlie,

Is there any progress on this front since we have the exact same situation? We intend to use a pre-order app and anticipate that customers would have a mix of instock and pre-order items in cart which they would then want delivered asap (i.e. split deliveries). We need to charge for those 2 or more deliveries since it's an actual cost to us. However, the literature of all the existing pre-order apps doesn't inspire confidence that they have the ability to enable this.
