Hey yall. I left my package at USPS in the morning and I just checked its tracking history and it says "Delayed for postage assessment, held awaiting payment".
This is the first time I've seen this message, and I have no idea why it is being assessed. I bought the label directly from Shopify, weighed and measured the package, and input the correct measurement. It's not a card issue either because I dropped off two packages at FedEx, and they passed just fine. I was hoping to go tomorrow and check, but they're closed for Juneteenth. It's sad because this order was expected to be delivered by Friday.
Any ideas why its been delayed? Has this happened to you guys?
Hi @osichuu,
That message usually means USPS flagged the package for postage discrepancy, for example, if the weight/dimensions entered during label purchase were slightly off or didn't match what they scanned at the facility. Even a small difference (like rounding up to the next ounce or inch) can trigger a manual hold for reassessment and payment.
Since you bought the label through Shopify and entered accurate info, it might be worth double-checking:
Whether your label included all package surcharges (like if it's a non-machinable item, irregular shape, etc.)
If any packaging used differed from what was specified (like using Priority Mail packaging for a First Class label)
When USPS reopens, you can call or visit with your tracking number, and they’ll usually allow you to pay the difference in postage if needed to release the item.
To avoid issues like this in the future and keep customers informed if delays happen, tools like ParcelPanel Order Tracking can help. It gives your buyers real-time shipment updates, branded tracking pages, and proactively alerts them when packages hit snags like this. It saves you a ton of follow-up DMs and emails.
Hope your parcel gets moving soon, let us know how it goes!
And if this helped, feel free to mark it as a solution so others can find it too.
