Accepting credit cards, warehouses, and shipping and fulfilling orders
Hi. Is is possible to rearrange the order of shipping options at the checkout? Default is "Local Pickup" and many customers skip through to the checkout and their order requires "Domestic Shipping" as they don't live in my local area. How can I set "Domestic Shipping" as the default option?

Hi @Auswah1,
It is currently not possible to re-arrange the order of the available shipping options at checkout, which will always default to showing the cheapest shipping option first and then the other rates in ascending order of price. This is why you'll be seeing your local pickup option appearing first.
Can you tell me which country you are based, and to whom you are offering local pickup as an option to? If you're in the US, you can offer the local pickup option only to customers in the state you are in through your shipping zones—meaning that only customers in that state will see the option for local pickup, and all other customers will only see delivery options. There are also some third-party apps that allow you to set shipping rates to specific ZIP codes or cities, such as Shipping Rates by ZipCode and Advanced Shipping Rules, which will allow you to reduce the area in which customers can choose pickup as an option. This won't solve the problem entirely as customers who live close to the pickup location can still choose pickup even when they want delivery, but it will at least help you prevent customers much further away from choosing this option by mistake.
I hope this helps but please let me know if you have further questions.

In looking back, I see this has been an issue since at least 2013. We have the same problem - We offer "Pick up shop" only for our state, since it's the default (free) people just go by it, whether or not they are planning to pick up. Why can't we decide the order or the default for each shipping option - that would fix this. OR have not default and make the customer choose a shipping option.
I have this issue several times a day. It is very very annoying and I end up cancelling orders as trying to get people to pay for it after the order is hard
As a result not being able to rearrange the order .. I included a $25 charge for Store Pickup - and in the description I indicate this will be refunded.. We were having almost daily people selecting the free pick-up option, needing to contact them with the need to select another option (we had to invoice them).. since this change, have not had a single store pickup selected which is great.
Hi @DougieTr ,
Klaudia here from the Zapiet team.
I'm glad you found a workaround! However, if you're still looking for options, our app Store Pickup + Delivery might be able to help you!
I understand that you would like to have the ability to rearrange the rates at Shopify checkout. However, this is not possible. With our app though, you will be able to show the correct rate according to the checkout method. If a customer selects store pickup on our widget, our app will load the store pickup rate at checkout. The same goes for delivery and shipping. Therefore, customers will not be able to choose different rates and create confusion!
If you'd like to explore and interact with our widget, please visit our Demo Store!
Our app also comes with a 14-day free trial! I will recommend giving it a go to see if it suits your needs!
Please let me know if you have any questions. You may also reach out on live chat and by email (support@zapiet.com)
Cheers,
Klaudia from Zapiet
Why is the facility to select a "Default Shipping Option" seemingly impossible for Shopify Developers to implement? This apparently simple coding change has been requested by Shopify Customers on the Community Forums since 2013, almost 10 YEARS!!!!
I'm not a Liquid coder, but his seems such a easy change for your developers to do and yet no-one at Shopify HQ seems to have any understanding of the massive inconvenience the lack of this feature is causing to many 1000's of Shopify store owners.
Every time a customer fails to change the Default Shipping method from the cheapest option (which is always the Automatic Default), we have to email them and ask them for an additional Postage payment to cover the shortfall. This is hugely embarrassing, very unprofessional, time-consuming for the Shopify Store owner and leaves a very bad taste in the customer's mouth. Judging by some of the emails we have received in response, we fully expect some of these customers will never buy from us again, exclusively for this reason.
I also think the problem is becoming worse as people purchase from smaller screen devices, where the Shipping Options and the Order Summary aren't visible at the same time, on the same bit of screen. So maybe don't have a "Default" at all and force the Customer to make a Shipping selection?
I don't really understand why Shopify are so unwilling to fix this issue? If you don't understand the problem please message me and I can explain the implications in great detail. And please don't suggest some over-priced monthly App subscription, this is a fundamental part of any sensible e-commerce software and should be included "out-of-the box". ( I checked 3 British web store software providers, and they all allow the Store owner to choose the default shipping method as a standard setting.)
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yer... any more news on this...?
This is mind boggling we have no control over the default method or sort order....
Can someone at Shopify sort this out please ASAP
Hi all,
We've just launched a new app, Shipping Rate Power Toy which will allow you to re-order rates.
At the moment you can reorder by name (a-z, z-a), price (low-high, high-low) or on the shipping code (which you can set via other apps such as the Bespoke Shipping app).
We will be looking at expanding this functionality down the line.
Cheers

This app works for me. Thanks!
Hello @mattayres
Please check here for the same reply https://community.shopify.com/c/payments-shipping-and/please-make-it-so-that-we-can-re-order-shippin...
Page you linked to was archived, the issue remains.
It's now 2024 and still no solution to this issue. The cost of the inability to change the order of shipping options is quite substantial for our business as well.
I installed the BeSure Checkout Rules app, which costs $5/month and it allows me to sort the shipping options how I want (with Free storage and Free pickup at the bottom of the list).
However, this function should absolutely be a native feature in Shopify.
Note that Shopify makes a 20% commission off paid apps so I guess you could say Shopify is making money by not fixing this issue, pretty frustrating...
Hi @theDMM ,
You can reorder rates using our FREE APP Shipping Rate Power Toy, available here: https://apps.shopify.com/reorder-rates
Thanks

I'm new to Shopify so this is just a guess. I've seen quite a few threads where people has been asking for changes and more development for years. I was really impress also to find this thread as I thought I would find an easy answer to my issue.
My guess is that Shopify doesn't make this or any other developmentsresuest as this would affect the business for all the rest of the apps that are trying to see (us!) their services, to bring the solution to our problems.
If you solve the problem from its root cause (ahem! Shopify) then there are no more problems/symptoms to treat. End of business.
I dotn want to go around paying for more apps to do things as I'm just starting with my small business, but the more I look for solutions, the more apps I have to pay it seems.
Cheers
I am in the Uk, selling wax melts.
We have an option which is called OPEN BOX, it allows the customer to add items to their order over time. They don't pay for shipping until they choose the CLOSE BOX at check out.
These are customers that use us all the time and know what an OPEN BOX is.
We also have standard shipping too for customers that just want something quick and sent out.
The problem we are facing almost daily is the fact that a first time customer will choose OPEN BOX as it is the first option in the check out list. This means that we are constantly having to email the customer to find out if they chose OPEN BOX by accident.
If we could arrange the shipping method at check out to how we wanted it seen by customers, this would our lives so much easier.
I don't do coding myself and would love for someone to make this possible for us shopify users.
The site and layout of everything else is spot on.
Just PLEASE CHANGE THIS!
Thankyou!
Hi there,
you can do this with out FREE app Shipping Rate Power Toy (https://apps.shopify.com/reorder-rates)
Setup is easy, just enter the rate name of your OPEN BOX rate, then change the setting to 'place all other rates' 'at the top' which will effectively order this rate to the bottom.
Be aware due to shopify limitations this doesn't currently work for draft orders, and if you're on Shopify PLUS and have checkout.liquid customisations, you must enable checkout extensibility on your checkout for this to work.
This is NOT an appropriate solution to this problem. It is a poor workaround which minimises the problem ONLY in the US. It doesn't work AT ALL in the UK. Even Victor, the Shopify Staff member who posted the "Solution" says, "This won't solve the problem entirely".
If something doesn't solve the problem to which it is applied, how can it possibly be considered a solution? And yet Victor states it is an "Accepted Solution". Accepted by whom? Not the Shopify User base, that's for sure. I propose that the "ACCEPTED SOLUTION" badge on the Discussion needs to be immediately removed.
Come on Shopify, it's now more than 10 years since people started asking for this very fundamental facility, which I'm sure would take a competent Shopify coder less than an hour to complete. It would make the lives of many 100's of 1000's of Shopify Store owners so much less stressful, so I just can't understand why you appear to be so reluctant to add this vital bit of functionality.
And for all those App companies out there offering a genuine Solution to the problem, congratulations for showing Shopify how easy it is to achieve, but I have absolutely no interest in paying a monthly fee for something that should be an integral part of the basic Shopify software. I'm happy to pay for embellishments and Add-ons through Apps, but not things that other e-commerce providers include as a standard and essential feature of the core package.
Please all other Discussion Users, click the REPORT button to "report" this solution to the Discussion Moderator. It isn't any sort of Solution and needs to be removed from the Discussion so that someone from Shopify Development team start to recognise this as a genuine problem.
Has there been an update on this or is this still true - that we cannot specify a display order for shipping options?
Yes you can do this with our FREE app! Shipping Rate Power Toy https://apps.shopify.com/reorder-rates
Please Shopify, if you take time to read the discussion you will see that this isn't any sort of solution (for over 10 years now). This is a genuine problem that your development team needs to address - and it is a very simple one. Any argument to this fact is purely making excuses. It is highly obvious the only reason this hasn't been done yet is for Shopify's financial gain, which gives Shopify a significantly poor image and lowers users faith, trust and recommendation/promotion of your service.
The accepted answer is wrong now in 2023, now it is possible to do this using apps.
You can easily use BeSure Checkout Rules app to add a rule to reorder shipping methods based on order total, address, product tags, customer tags etc. Reorder shipping methods in a fixed ranking or by delivery type or by price. You can even create a rule to first sort by, for example, delivery price and then sort again by shipping rate name and show shipping rates in the final order.
This rule is only available for PRO plan. You won't be charged for the first 3 days even after upgrading plan.
Hi there,
We offer a FREE app which allows you to reorder shipping rates!

Hey @Parcel_Intellig
Is is possible to change the shipping method too? so that shipping is at the top by default? As at the moment for some customers, it is defaulting pickup at the top which is causing loads of mistakes. Photo attached. Please let us know.
The photo shows 'ship' in this case, but for some people it shows 'pick up' as default and loads of people keep mistakenly processing orders as a method of pick up. This never used to happen so something has changed as it's happened 5 times in the last 4 days.
Unfortunately not, shopify doesn't allow such modifications.
