Receive money from customers with ShopifyPayments by giving my WiseBusinessAccount instead of a bank

Is it a must to have a local physical bank account to receive money from customers with Shopify Payments? I don't have a real local bank account for my business. Can I set up ShopifyPayments with my online account=WiseBusinessAccount? Wise is not a bank, but it can receive payments. But I'm not sure if I can use it as an account with ShopifyPayments since Wise is not a real bank.

Hey again, @Adam777. Thank you for following up with me here.

Based on some internal resources, a virtual bank account like Wise is something supported by Shopify Payments, meaning that is can be used to receive payouts from Shopify Payments as along as it meets the criteria I've outlined in my previous reply.

Customers that are paying for orders would be having their payments processed by a payment gateway. I'm unsure if Wise can process payments, but if you have your Wise Account set up to Shopify Payments, Shopify Payments would process the payments, and those payments would be paid out to your Wise Account.

Hey there, @Adam777. Thanks for reaching out to the Shopify Community today with your question around virtual bank accounts and Shopify Payments! My name is Imogen. It's good to meet you!

Virtual Bank Accounts (such as Wise) are supported by Shopify Payments, but the account still needs to hit some criteria in order to function as expected. I have the specific expectations you'll want to make sure your Wise Account meets below:

  • Be a full checking account
  • The Wise Account must be using the Correct Currency (so the currency you'll be paid out in)
  • Eligible for ACH transfers (or your regions equivalent)
  • Can be debited by Shopify

These criteria are not something we can check ourselves on Shopfiy, as they're specifically related to your Wise Account. I recommend that you check with Wise to make sure your account meets these requirements!

Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Thank you Imogen!
So Shopify Payments work with a Wise Business Account? Customers can pay online with their Visa and Master cards too? And I can receive their payments to my Wise Business Account through Shopify? Without me having a physical local bank account?

Hey again, @Adam777!

Awesome to hear that you're looking to start selling digital goods! What sort of art do you do? My sister is also an artist, and attends conventions all over North America selling her art of fans of the comic industry!

If you're looking to sell digital goods, I have a great resource here that can help you do it! Ignore the title - the most important information in that blog is not the types of products to sell, but how to go about selling them! Definitely take the time to review this resource when you have the chance!

Additionally, you should consider adding a watermark to your digital art, as you don't want folks being able to copy/paste your images, or make a claim that your art is theirs. A watermark is a great way to protect your creations, so you should look into that!

Hi. Thanks 🙂 I like 2D and 3D art and I love music too. Comics are great 🙂 Currently I'm living in Hungary, Europe. Sadly shopify payments is not supported in Hungary.
