Separate payment methods for different locations

Separate payment methods for different locations

Hello. I am a very new to shopify, so I cannot find out by myself how our problem can be solved.

We have two different locations for our products and we need to specify payment methods for each location separably.

Is it possible? That is fine if some coding is needed.

Hey, @Kaseijin!

This is Summer from the Social Care team at Shopify. Thanks for your question!

At the moment, it's not possible to restrict a payment gateway to a location or a product. Customizing the checkout through coding sounds like a great idea to achieve this, however, if you're on the Basic, Shopify, or Advanced plan, it's not possible to edit the checkout. The reason for this is that the checkout code is not made accessible for its security; so we can ensure that your information and your customers' remain safe at all times.

The checkout can still be edited but this is only viable when you're on the Shopify Plus plan, which is our subscription plan made for large enterprises. If you are on this plan, I recommend reaching out to a Shopify Expert to see if they are able to customize the checkout to fit your requirements. They're the best point of contact to provide confirmation on coding customizations as they have the expertise to support coding.

Other than editing the checkout, the only other feasible option right now is to open separate stores and assign different payment gateways to each store.

I understand these workarounds may not be a potential solution so what I can do is share this feedback with our development team. It's not a guaranteed solution, however, it's good to pass this on so the team is aware of what features you would like to see in the platform and so they can possibly consider adding this feature in the future.

For me to precisely relay the importance of assigning a payment gateway to a location or product, do you mind providing more information as to how this feature would impact your business?

This is very limiting and prevent smaller shop that are doing well the possibility to access other market without the burden to open and manage another shop

Has there been any updates to this since 2021?  I am a Shopify Plus user and have a similar use case.  We have a 3rd-party distributor for the UK/EU.  For brand continuity, It would be nice to have those markets purchase from our main store, but payments for the stock sold get split off into their payment gateway.  For example our main store has digital products, so if an EU customer purchased an inventory item stocked in the EU and one of our digital products, the sale of the item and VAT goes through gateway X, while the digital product sale goes through one of our gateways (Shopify Payments, PayPal, etc.).

The new updates in B2B for the Summer Edition 2024 help push this capability forward for sure.

What do you mean by two different locations? Is it two different countries or states or zip codes?  You can easily offer separate payment methods based on countries, states or zip codes using PayRules: Hide Payment Methods app.

As it is the most common, I assume you meant two different countries and you want to show Cash on Delivery and E-transfer options only for Canada. Here are the steps you can follow to achieve it:

  1. Select Cash on Delivery from Select payment methods dropdown field.
  2. If you don't find your payment option like E-transfer in the above dropdown field, you can write it in the Additional payment methods field.
  3. Lastly select Hide if not found and Canada from the Countries field options like the below screenshot.

Now the customers from Canada only can see the COD and E-transfer payment options at the checkout page. Similarly, you can create another rule for another country like USA. I hope this all makes senses. Thanks.
