Set Shipping Default by Item in Mixed Cart

Hello,

My store currently requires a custom freight rate for heavy or fragile oversize items, which is not a problem if that is the only item in the cart. The client receives an order confirmation outlining the subtotal and a note on the shipping cost line that the shipping amount will be quoted separately vs. a dollar amount.

However if there is a mix cart of items that do not require white glove that have been ordered with a heavy item that does, the shipping amount defaults to the general shipping amount for the easily shipped items

We, of course, do not want to default all of our shipping to custom freight rate for furniture, but would like to default to the custom freight rate for furniture/order confirmation if those those items are included in the mixed cart. Clients will still need to be able to order the smaller items and move through the normal checkout without having to wait for further instruction and cost.


Needless to say, it is difficult to explain to a client that their shipping will now be more. And we do not want to have a loss on freight charges for larger pieces if we miss any of these.

This would be possible by using a third party shipping rate calculator app like ShipMagic.

Basically what you need to do is, you need to create groups of products that have the same shipping rate and then choose how you want to display the rates when products from multiple groups are present in cart. This is possible in our app ShipMagic which is free currently.

You can also do this by creating Custom Shipping Profiles in Shopify, but you cannot change the default behaviour when products from multiple shipping profiles are present in cart. Shopify will add up the rates causing the shipping rate to be very high and customers will drop off.
