Set up Shipping Costs by Postcode

Hello all,

 

I'm migrating a customer over to Shopify; the delivery options available on the Shopify plan are not complex enough. I need to be able to set different prices according to the postcode in the UK for Royal Mail and flat rates for courier services etc.. I was looking at some apps to facilitate this, one of them being Better Shipping, but both apps say that I need carrier calculated shipping enabled? I sent an email to support last week, but I haven't heard back. I have read historic posts about an extra monthly charge or paying a year's fees upfront? Can anyone shed any light on this issue, please? Much appreciated. Louise 🙂

Thanks for getting in touch with us about this! I can see why needing more flexibility in offering shipping rates would be something your client is looking for, and Better Shipping is used by a lot of merchants for this reason. The app offers a few different features and the ability to offer different rates based on more localized locations and regions is a particularly useful one. The one thing I would suggest doing is checking with Better Shipping's support team that all of the features they offer are available to merchants based in the UK; you can email them directly at better.shipping@atomyard.com.

 

The app does require the carrier-calculated shipping feature, which comes as standard with our Advanced Plan. However, as you've read elsewhere, you can add this feature onto any of our lower plans for an additional $20 per month, or you can receive it for free if you switch to an annual billing cycle for your subscription. I'm sorry to hear that you've not received a response to your email; I will be emailing you shortly so we can discuss this in more detail and potentially get this feature enabled on the store. I will be sending the email to the email address linked to your forums profile.

 

I hope we can discuss this further, and if you have any other questions, please let me know!

Hi Louise,

 

If you still need a solution, Intuitive Shipping is able to help with this. You would be able to set shipping based on postal code, and it is even specifically set up for the UK postal code format. You can also set up as many different custom rates as needed for your various carrier services. I'd be happy to help if you have any questions about it, or if you need a hand.

I still have a requirement for more complex shipping rules, here's a list of what I'm trying to replicate on the new Shopify Store. Can Intuitive Shipping help with this. The original app I was looking at can't calculate by weight? As you can see, different services are defined by either country or postcode and the calculation formula is weight and or order value.

(Directed to Intuitive app in particular but didn't seem to land directly under that comment..)

 

We provide food delivery services to select zip codes in the US in progress to move to Shopify.

 

Does your app offer the following:

 

1. The ability to set delivery zones by specific zip codes?

2. The ability to create custom order cut off times against specific zip codes?

 

For illustrative purposes these are the types of actions we wish to do:

  • Customer places order by 4PM, receives next day if in Zone X (and against a minimum spend which I assume comes from the Shopify side)
  • Customer places order by 4PM, receives two days later if in Zone Y (and against a minimum spend)

All these apps are an expensive work around that should really be included in Shopify not something that requires paying for !!

100% agree with this.

In Shopify the UK is (wrongly) a single entity, no subzones or territories. Does anyone at Shopify realise that Northern Ireland does not have a land border with mainland UK, or that posting to the Highlands of Scotland is a very different cost to other mainland UK destinations?

There are loads of threads stretching back years on this, but still no fix from Shopify. I think Shopify is great in so many ways, but this is a big omission if you are a UK based business or shipping to the UK.

Come on Shopify, stop promising massive feature enhancements (with vague release dates), and fix this basic thing for us poor UK merchants!

I'm in the process of migrating fom BigCommerce, I can't believe how basic the shipping rules functions still are in Shopify.  $15/month on an App to be able to control postcode based shipping rates... are you joking!!  Fix this, go look at BC if you're unsure how!!  and yes the UK is a nation of united Countries and Islands, all of which that need separate shipping rates/zones.  I built my first Shopify Site, about 5 years ago, seems Shipping functionality hasn't progressed since then.. Wow!!

Please add postcodes to the UK locations please! They are many spots in the UK where carriage varies dramatically! 

Its good that Shopify have included Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man as separate entities, it is still missing more shipping options for us UK merchants! 

This is not an advanced option - this should just be fixed! It is so annoying to realise that Ireland has all its counties to choose from as well as other countries, like Spain divided into provinces, as an example. When will this come to the UK merchants? 

 

Please add postcodes to the UK location!

It allows you to draw areas on a map to create custom shipping zones and set their own costs.

Thanks Amos, but this really should not be necessary (it is $15 per month) and - as many on the thread have said - UK regions should be built in to Shopify in the way that they are for every other country in the world!

Shopify seem to think their recent update to UK regions is sufficient - so now we have England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland (and UK Forces Overseas). 

They clearly have still not consulted with anyone in the UK, including the shipping companies themselves who could demonstrate exactly what the differences are in shipping costs! The recent update is not sufficient to solve the shipping issues!

The only useful addition is Northern Ireland (and perhaps UK Forces Overseas for those that need this), but as others have mentioned, the Highlands of Scotland, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight are still not identified as separate regions for shipping purposes in the way that they most certainly are by the shipping companies. 

Why won't Shopify do the work and fix this in the way that we need it fixed? If they had done their homework properly they could and should have released this when they did the recent update surely??!!

I don't work for shopify so I can't answer most of your questions...

The app I suggested (https://apps.shopify.com/shipping-by-map) was not built for this use case in mind, but it does offer a solution for your issue, at least until Shopify add the regions you need.

Perhaps you'll find the app useful for other reasons too, for example custom local delivery areas, custom local pickup areas or city specific shipping charges.

I hope Shopify will soon add more UK regions for you and all other merchants who need it.
