Shipping for subscriptions on the Shopify Checkout

Is there a way to influence shipping rates for subscription items on the checkout? Currently, we see a vague, general "shipping" label as the only option which is pretty difficult to work around considering items are shipped immediately off of the checkout - not on the 1st recurring charge thereafter....TIA!
