I sell yarn. It isn't all that heavy unless someone purchases a whole heck of a lot of it. It's about 4 oz. for one skein, and my mailers weigh practically nothing. I created a shipping profile for one item and allow Shopify to calculate the shipping for my customers' carts - they SHOULD be able to choose First Class for 3 or fewer items from my shop. That isn't what's happening. I was shocked the day the shop opened and everyone chose Priority. I figured they were  super excited to get their items, but no... it defaults to only Priority.

I don't want my customers to have to pay $9+ for shipping one item - that's roughly a third of the cost of one item in the shop!

I just tried to check one out from my own shop - same problem.

What am I doing wrong please? All items weigh 100 grams each in my shop (unless it's a 50g skein or 150g, but that's rare). 100g is just under 4 oz. So if the app is adding up the grams plus the extra few grams I've tacked on for the weight of shipping materials, why isn't it offering First Class if I have it checked off on the shipping profile?

Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to make sure it's really clear as to what's happening and why it seems so strange to me.

If anyone can help me fix this, I'd be very grateful. Thank you in advance!

To fix the issue where only Priority shipping is offered instead of First Class on Shopify:

  1. Check Product Weights: Make sure each product's weight is accurately listed in Shopify, including the correct unit of measurement.
  2. Review Packaging Weight: Confirm that the total weight of products plus default box doesn't exceed the 13 oz limit for USPS First Class. Adjust if necessary.
  3. Simplify Shipping Profiles: If you have multiple shipping profiles, consider consolidating them to streamline settings and avoid conflicts.
  4. Contact Shopify Support: If problems persist after these steps, reaching out to Shopify support can help identify and resolve deeper issues.
  5. Consider External Apps: If you have a Carrier Calculated Shipping (CCS) enabled plan, using a PH Multi Carrier Shipping label app might offer more flexibility, including First Class shipping options.

Hey, @GroovyHues.

Thank you for reaching out and bringing this to our attention.

It's possible that you need to make some adjustments to the default package so that it's an envelope package in order for the checkout to calculate accurate shipping rates for First Class Mail. For an order to qualify for a First Class Mail label, it must be:

  • 13 oz (0.8125 lb) or less
  • In an envelope larger than 11.5 x 6.1 inches and no bigger than 15 x 12 inches, link here.
  • Or in a soft package less than 0.75 inches thick
  • A domestic shipment (International shipments are not supported for First Class Mail at this time)
  • Note: Boxes do not qualify for First Class Mail rates
  • There was a change required by the USPS to enforce First Class letters and First Class flats to not hide the postage on label. This change was implemented in early August 2020. The current expected behaviour is to show the price for First Class Letters and First Class Flats.
