Shopify Payments confusion (can I sell to countries outside the listed 23 or not?)

If I search for supported countries using shopify payments I get this text and a list of 23 countries: "Shopify Payments is available only to stores in certain countries". I can interpret this two ways, either it means I can only use shopify payments if my business is located in one of these 23 countries OR I can only accept payments from customers situated in one of the 23 countries.

The confusion grows when I search how I accept payments in Greece for example, where Shopify lists Stripe as the preferred partner. If I go to add Stripe to my store, I am not able to since shopify payments is available to me.

TL:DR; With my business located in Sweden, can I accept payments from customers in Greece using shopify payments? If not, how can I add stripe to accept payments in Greece?

Hey, @Berkzon!

Happy to clear this up for you.

Shopify Payments can be used by merchants located in any of the 23 countries listed

on this page hereSo, as a merchant located in Sweden, you can use Shopify Payments to accept payments from customers in Greece or any other country. You can check out Shopify Payments for Sweden by clicking here.

However, when it comes to Greece specifically, Shopify Payments is not currently available in that region. That's why when you look at that page, you see the options for third party providers like Stripe.

I hope this clears up any confusion. If you have any further questions or need more information, please let me know. By the way, are you just starting out and is this your first store? I'd love to hear more about your business and goals!

Thanks for you quick and kind reply Maz!
That's exactly what I was hoping for 😍 This is the first shop I am building using shopify (been trying woocommerce and jetshop earlier). I will be using a print-on-demand company that can ship pretty much globally and wanted to make sure we had payment methods to cover it, and based on your reply I think shopify payments will be perfect

Hello, @Letter_Hound!

I thought I would chime in here and offer you some guidance!

If you are based in Greece, you can find the available payment gateways for your region by visiting this link. Simply scroll down and enter 'Greece' in the search box under 'Payment information by country or region'.

Stripe, Authorize.net, and Ayden are all excellent options to consider, and they are popular among our merchants. If you have any questions about these providers, please feel free to contact their support teams directly.

To learn how to integrate and set up these payment gateways on your Shopify store, you can refer to our helpful article located on this page.

I'd love to hear more about your store and what you're selling? If you have any further inquiries or need additional assistance, please don't hesitate to reach out. We're here to support you every step of the way!

Hi @Maz

I have a shopify e-shop in Greece, and I'm using the stripe provider as shopify payments is not available. The problem is that stripe gets 2% of the transaction and shopify also takes another 2%. Is there a way to not be charged these extra fees from shopify as it does not participate at any stage of the transaction, instead stripe does all the process.

Hey, @cpapasta!

Thanks for joining the discussion.

This would be expected behaviour. If Stripe is enabled, each merchant will pay transaction fees to Shopify, according to the plan they’re on.

You're seeing two transaction fees because you're using both Stripe (a third-party provider) and Shopify

When you're using a third-party payment gateway, you will pay a transaction fee to Shopify on each order that is made using this gateway. This rate will depend on the plan you are using. You will also be required to pay the payment gateway the processing fees they charge for each order processed using their services.

Shopify charges a fee for integrating with external providers like Stripe. I appreciate your request to not be charged the fees however this is not something we can offer at this time.

Let me know if there is anything else you need help with!

Hello @Maz ,

thank you for your fast response!

I'm really disappointed  that Shopify leaves us with no option but to use a third party service and eventually being charged with double fees per transaction. Is this something you are planning to patch in the near?

Hello, @cpapasta!

No problem!

I understand your frustration with the fees per transaction due to using a third-party service alongside Shopify.

It's important to note that these fees are necessary to cover the upkeep of the gateway, as well as the costs, maintenance, and integrations with third-party payment providers. Unfortunately, I do not have any information regarding potential changes to this in the near future.

Thank you for your understanding.
