Why does the free shipping discount apply to all delivery methods?

Why does the free shipping discount give free shipping on everything; Ground, 2nd day, next day, etc? Why are we unable to control that? We'd love to be able to use the discount in my store but no way am I giving free Next Day Air on 60" long rolls of paper that can weight up to 40 lbs. We'd lose money.

Am I missing something? Thanks!

Thank you for reaching out to the Community! I'm happy to provide some assistance with creating discounts, to ensure this gets resolved. To share some insight, discounts have various purchase requirements that are applied directly to products as opposed to other features within the admin (i.e shipping rates). 

Due to this, free shipping would not consider shipping rates when applying the discount and is a current limitation. As I can completely understand the impact of this, I'm more than happy to make a note with our Developers. We are always looking for ways to improve the platform and appreciate the feedback. 

To workaround this however, you can select the "Exclude shipping rates over a certain amount" feature when creating the discount. This ensures the discount is applied to shipping rates below a certain dollar amount as opposed to order amounts. While it cannot target specific rates, you can use a dollar amount to limit the discount being used on more expensive shipping rate options. Alternatively, you can also check out the Shopify App Store for all available discount apps. There may be one that fits with your shops needs and allows for this to be achieved.

Thank you for the suggestion. However, by doing it that way, the customer then gets free shipping on not just Ground shipping, but 2nd Day and Next Day shipping as well. And I don’t want to be giving away expedited shipping.

You can set free shipping based on each carrier's services with PH MultiCarrier Shipping Label. For your scenario you have to set three shipping conditions:

1. Ground shipping> Free shipping

2. 2nd Day> flat rates/ carrier calculated rates

3. Next Day> flat rates/ carrier calculated rates

You can now target shipping methods for shipping discounts using Advanced Free Shipping
Theres many more checkout conditions to target also, for more complex needs.
