Why was an initial deposit required for my store setup?

Hi friends,

I am from India. While i set up my store this year in Jan 2023, i had paid shopify a lumpsum amount of 5000/- Rs and then i was on trial for 3 months at a charge of Rs 20/- . Post 3 months i was charges 1499/- each month.

My question is why was the deposit taken in the beginning? 

Request youll to revert with an email id where i can communicate with shopify. I couldnt find any.

Thank you for the context you've provided. It certainly is not typical to have a pay a deposit in order to sign up for Shopify. Folks just need to enroll for one of the subscription plans available at our pricing page, and then they can begin selling. Hi, Yes I am facing the same thing, don’t really understand why they are charging 5000 inr deposit, if someone is new and want to start with 20 rps plan they will be welcomed by this 5K scam
