Cannot update product handle with unicode characters

Hi, I noticed that when saving products with unicode titles (non-ascii characters), the url will match the title and include the unicode characters, so that urls can appear in different languages such as hebrew or japanese. However I am unable to replicate this using the API.

When will shopify support updating product handles with non-ascii (unicode) characters using the api? This is quite important for supporting multi-lingual shops.
