I have a brick and mortar store and want to implement a self check out but the products need to be able to have unique serial numbers for every product whether they are the same size/color/type or not. Is there a third-party app that allows us to input a serial number into every item?
I would prefer that Shopify engineers implement this asap as an option. It would greatly benefit Shopify because many industries would use it beyond self-checkout such as warranty issues, returns, RFID solutions, self-checkout, shrink reduction, labor cost reduction, personalized service increase, batch tracking and more. I think that it can be done quickly through Shopify Products and in order to be on the cutting edge of technology this must be implemented immediately.

Great to hear you’re enjoying this solution as we’re about to implement the exact same thing at our operation. We need serial numbers, work orders, layaways, etc and lightspeed is perfect for all that stuff.

I need a to be able to add serial numbers and a friend that has been using Rain POS / Web shopping cart .
He's been having a lot of luck with it. They even have Rental and other things that a normal high end pos has and has the website has been getting a lot of organic traffic. Seems like they have it going on. Im checking them out and thinking about moving over. If you or anyone has experience with Rain POS let me know the pro's and con's. Also I looks like they have a lot of apps that are built in like email and sms already bundled. I just started looking at it.

Hi there,
Not sure if this would be sufficient for you, but I just use the Comments feature on the order page to track serial numbers. If there is more than one item in an order, with serial numbers required, you could type "Item a: " then scan / type the serial number for Item a. Then on the next line (or in a new comment) type "Item b:" then scan / type the serial number.
Just a quick workaround that is adequate for my needs.

what about tracking the items by serial numbers only on sales transaction.. somewhere where the person who prepare the order can scan the item serial number upon performing sales delivery and this serial be printed on the invoice ( For warranty purposes)
For example, if the customer orders 2 of the same item , we need the ability to scan two serial numbers and print on the invoice
Any thoughts are highly appreciated

I don't understand how this isn't a core feature. There is already a database for this, just need to add a field. How many add-ons should we need to purchase before we switch storefronts?
i have found a workaround that enables me to insert a searcheable serial number, although not ideal another address can be added to the customer details and a serial number can be placed in one of the empty colums
if you then do a search in the customers section for a serial number it will show the customer allocated
I totally agree that is why we haven't switched our POS from the one we have to shopify..every other POS has this and yes it's s usually a core feature.
When do you expect this to be done .. we have been wanting this for years - please let us know

Background how we use Shopify web
We have (windows) POS send csv file every 15 mins to update Shopify qty, wholesale price, retail price.
anyways we just dont like this and want to move to 100% shopify web and pos to streamline.
Serial numbers
vendors send some hard goods items on consignment. Every 2 weeks we create sold reports and report which items sold based of serial numbers.
Shopify has no serial number tracking system, which is core feature on most POS systems that are real POS systems.
So I think I may finally found a way to track my serial numbered consignment items and I found it in this article on sku numbers.

The last two paragraph may be the key
so my thought was to create skus like this
SKU-CON-SERIAL#
with this I can have one sku for the same item and same color
know this is a consignment item
also know the serial number
now for reporting...I am going to research that but whom ever reads this let me know what you think of this idea.
