Yes, there are several. There is the Shopify POS App SDK (https://help.shopify.com/en/api/embedded-apps/shopify-pos-app-sdk), the Shopify REST Admin API (https://help.shopify.com/en/api/reference), and the Shopify GraphQL API (https://help.shopify.com/en/api/graphql-admin-api), to name just a few. The front-end user experience is accessed via the SDK, whereas the others are broader-scoped. Since all customers, products, and orders live in the Shopify admin, you have a lot of angles to get at what you need!

In addition to what Greg mentioned, we have App Bridge support for POS. This is the library you would use to create apps for Shopify POS.
