Can I integrate Shopify's Card Readers with a non Shopify App

My company created a POS app with a focus on in-store returns which integrates with Shopify to create exchange and upsell orders. At the moment, we are exploring adding physical card readers with our app. One of the most popular amongst our merchants is the Shopify Tap and Card Reader.

While this works great for Shopify POS, is there any way to integrate this and other Shopify card readers with an app outside of Shopify POS? For example, Square sells card reading hardware as well as provide SDKs to use it on any code stack/app.

Edit:  I did try to look at the shopify.dev documentation, but did not find much on the card readers.

Did you ever find an answer to this? I'm in almost the exact same situation. Other providers have an API that integrates with card readers and am interested if Shopify has the same...
