Can QR codes on externally printed gift cards work with Shopify?

Does anyone know, if we were to have gift cards printed with QR codes elsewhere other than through Shopify's hardware store, will they work?

Also, Shopify's paper gift cards, has anyone tested them? Because there's no photo of them in the hardware store I don't know if they'd be sturdy or not.
