does disabling gift cards refund customer?

Hi,

I have a customer that wants to use her gift card which was purchased through our website in our physical store.
Do I need to list the item on the website for her to enter the code or do I just disable the gift card and the original funds remain with me?
I know 'disabling' is permanent so I don't want to do anything rash.
