How can I add 'Modifiers' to POS systems for better cafe usage?

Hello,

Please add "Modifiers" to Shopify POS. This would allow the POS system to be used in coffee shops, cafes, and restaurants. The ability to select "no toppings" or "non-dairy" and other things like that natively built in would be a substantial functional addition. As well as a kitchen display and other common Cafe features that many competitors have. As of now, the system is unusable for these types of businesses.

Thank you.

Hello, @frontierrelics.

Thanks for reaching out and sharing this feedback with us!

We understand that being able to add modifiers on the Shopify POS is important to you, and we can see how this function can be beneficial for our merchants in the food industry (eg. cafes and restaurants). We'd be happy to share your feedback as a feature request with our development team. If Shopify moves forward with any changes or releases new features, then we'll be sure to announce them on the Shopify Changelog.

That being said, while some options or modifiers can be accomplished through variants, there is a limit of 100 variants per product so this may not be the best solution for products with a lot of modifiers. However, if you need a solution for your business on the Shopify POS in the meantime, then you can take a look at some third-party apps that supports Shopify POS. For example, Infinite Options is supported on Shopify POS and the app allows you to create unlimited modifiers. This app doesn't need to create a variant for each modifier and it's not restricted by the 100 variant limit per product. If you need help with a third-party app, then the app developer is always available to assist you. Simply reach out to them directly using the contact information found in the Support section of their app's page.

We'd love to hear more about your business! Aside from coffee or drinks, what other types of products are you selling? Do you have a marketing plan prepared for your store?

Hello,

Is there any idea if this feature is in the works? We are absolutely on our last legs with Shopify. Between issues with no modifiers and constant disconnect issues with the Tap and Chip reader, we just can't take it anymore. We've been using Shopify for years. If adding modifiers and kitchen display options for small Cafe settings isn't in the works, then we WILL be completely leaving Shopify behind in favor of Square POS. It will be a VERY painful migration as we will have to completely migrate our inventory over and rebuild our online store from scratch. As well as get our customers list over and handle outstanding rewards. But as painful of that is, it will be well worth it to finally get a POS system that is functional and not half baked.

Hello, @frontierrelics.

Thank you for following up.

I've gone ahead and submitted a feature request on your behalf. However, while the feature requests can help our developers with prioritizing new feature developments, we're unable to provide a timeframe on when they will be ready. Instead, we'd recommend keeping an eye on our changelog for announcements of new features and/or upcoming changes.

If you have any other questions on this topic, don't hesitate to let me know.

We are preparing to launch a cafe, and would also love a modifier option.

Hey, @3CraftyMs.

Thanks for joining this thread!

I understand that you're launching a cafe business and I'd be happy to add you to this feature request. However, we're unable to provide any sort of timeline on when this feature will be available as previously stated. If Shopify moves forward with any new features or changes to the platform, then we'll be sure to announce them on the Shopify Changelog

I don't understand how Shopify can even call itself a viable POS solution when you don't have basic functionality such as product modifiers. We have more functionality on Square at a fraction of the price. I was promised that this system would do everything our Square system does. We discussed in detail our need for these basic functions and was assured that Shopify could meet those needs. Now, every time I turn around I'm being told I need another 3rd party app (with an additional cost) to provide the basic function that just comes with WooCommerce or Square. (Modifiers, Loyalty, Hiding Products by Customer Tag, Scheduling Clocking In). It is beyond infuriating.

1000% agree with this assessment. There are so many features considered foundational/basic with other systems like Square that are only available as add-ons with Shopify, like reviews (why on earth aren't reviews a basic built-in feature?!) and modifiers. It's ridiculous!

At this point March 2024, I have not been able to find a pos system that can accommodate both cafe/restaurant and retail needs in online, brick and mortar, and app environments.

Square has a retail pos and a restaurant pos that are two separate products.  Lightspeed same thing.  Both in online, brick and mortar, and app channels.

You would need to set up 2 pos stations at each brick and mortar.  One to handle food and drink products and a second to process retail item products.  If you have both in your store then customers will come up to you with both.  So you have 2 iPads there at your station and you tell the customer that you will need to charge their card twice on two different card readers…?  This simple is a terrible customer experience and we need to do better.

It is my opinion that Shopify has an amazing opportunity to solve this obvious problem across a huge part of the economy that is made up of retail food establishments that also sell retail items.  They are so close.  There are only a few features left to add and they along with thier app ecosystem would have it.

Here is what is needed in my opinion:

  • Product page with the 2,000 variants as promised in February 2024.
  • product page with at least 5 option sets up from the 3 option sets currently.  I can’t find any information if the number of options is also being increased or not.
  • product page with Modifiers.  I would suggest modeling these off of lightspeed.  This would be a separate UI section where we the users would build out our modifier groups, individual modifiers inside of those groups, and then be able to assign them to collections or individual products.  I would highly suggest making this as unlimited as possible.
  • The above mentioned then needs to work seamlessly on the Shopify POS app, online fulfillment, and any Shopify 3rd party app builder.
  • The flexibility to control the UI of the pos app to a tile based UI like toast, square restaurant, lightspeed restaurant, etc.  We need to be fast and searching and scrolling is not fast.

Currently the best solution Shopify has to offer all of the food establishments with retail items is the infinite options 3rd party app integration with the pos app.  This sounds great but is not a solution that can be used in real life.  This solution requires the pos operator to add all the base Shopify products to the cart first.  Then hit the infinite option tile on the pos screen.  Then go back over the entire order and ask the customer in line to go through the options for each of the products they already asked for.  Can you imagine a customer ordering a 16oz hot coffee with whole milk and vanilla syrup and a breakfast sandwich with egg, sausage, provolone cheese, on an everything bagel.

Having to add the base products first and then go back to add the “modifiers” is not how humans order.  They order the 1st item with the 1st items modifiers and variants.  Then they order the second item with the second items modifiers and variants.

While this solution meets the need from a technical standpoint it is simply unusable in real life with real staff and real customers in a real line.  We need the modifiers to show up for selection with the product just as the variations do now.

You can accomplish the KDS using 3rd party app “order management-trackeasy”.

We need your help Shopify.  You have an amazing opportunity to be the first to market with a comprehensive solution on 1 platform.  It really comes down to building out the flexibility your customers need to create their products on your platform.

All the selling features and AI in the world is useless to us if we can’t create the base product configured as we need it.

If you want to reach out, feel free to do so.  I am happy to help as able.

It's July 2024... any updates? With generative AI and crazy tech developments and the size of Shopify, I don't understand why this hasn't yet been done. We are both retail + F&B, need the modifier option so there aren't 1000s of variations for customer service staff to trawl through every time someone wants a Large Cappuccino, Extra Shot with Oat Milk, Extra Hot. Not great customer experience for Shopify admins, nor staff and definitely not for customers waiting to get their correct order.

Hey @Enki_Global - we've just released an app to try and solve this problem - POS Cafe allows you to create custom modifier sets to apply to products in Shopify POS. Would love you to check it out & give us feedback on how to make it even better 🙂 https://poscafe.app | https://apps.shopify.com/poscafe

Hi there! I understand your frustration - Shopify has previously had a huge gap in this area as variants don't work well for products that need to be really customised / modified (like a decaf mocha on oat with 2 sugars!). We've recently developed an app for Shopify Point of Sale to try and help solve this!

POS cafe allows merchants to create custom modifier sets (like milk types, syrups) to apply to products sold in Shopify Point of Sale. It's built to be easy to set up & use, and we're rolling out new features all the time to try and ensure the functionality adds maximum value for merchants.

Check us out on the app store - we'd love to hear your feedback and we're committed to working with our merchants to make POS Cafe really work for businesses in this space. https://poscafe.app | https://apps.shopify.com/poscafe

That's all well and good... but we are already paying exponentially more money for the pathetic Shopify platform that does not have the most basic POS modifier functionality. Everything is an add on and more money... workable forms... more money... loyalty... more money... scheduling... more money... I could go on an on. We are paying for a premium product and getting basic functionality that was promised by sales was included.

Hi @frontierrelics. did you end up finding a solution? We've built a POS extension that takes care of the modifier and KDS side of things (the KDS is available upon request at the moment as it's new). I used to work at Shopify on Retail and believe we have a solid plan to make Shopify a competitive solution for coffee shops and small restaurants. We only launched a couple of weeks ago and you can see the current available features on the tutorial video.  And here's the app store listing and website. Please get in touch if you'd like a demo, need getting set up or have any feedback. Thank you.
