How can I refund a gift card amount back to a customer's credit card?

Hello, we had a customer make a purchase and then decided they didn’t want the items. Instead of issuing her a credit back to her credit card, we issued a gift card for the amount of the items she returned. Now we would like to issue a credit for the gift card back to her credit card. How can we refund the money for the gift card to her credit card? Yes, we realize it would have been easier to originally credit the order back to her card, but there was a reason we didn’t do it that way. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

To provide the best advice here, it will depend on how you created the store credit gift card. Did you return the items in the order without refunding, and then simply issue a gift card marked as paid? 

If so, you could simply disable the gift card in your Shopify Admin by heading to Products > Gift Cards > Customer's Gift Card > Disable. Then, head to her order and refund the original order. That being said, if this order is over 90 days old you will no longer be able to issue a refund via the original order. 

If this isn't an option, please send me more details and we can brainstorm another way you can send a refund. 

In the meantime, I'd love to also learn more about your business. Do you only operate online, or do you also have a retail location?

While there is no native way to refund to a gift card, you can issue a gift card to your customer in the amount you wish to refund. Then, leave a note in the original order to the gift card in question.
